Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, March 31-April 3, 2018 Obituary Mark Allen West, Jr. March 4, 1992 – March 24, 2018 Born in Dallas on March 4, 1992, Mark Allen West passed way on March 24 in Sarasota, Florida. Mark graduated from Park City High School in Park City and from Auburn University in Alabama with a B.S. in engineering and business, before joining Marine Concepts in Sarasota as Project Manager to oversee the production of yacht hulls and flight simulators for the Armed Forces. A member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, Mark served as Pledge Trainer and Social Chairman. Mark is survived by his fiancé, Lauren Grace Leigh; father Mark West in Bradenton, Florida; his mother Kimberly and stepfather Charles Sachs from Greenwich, Connecticut; and grandparents Ann and Mark Shelton III from Hot Springs, Arkansas; as well as other relatives in Texas and Colorado. Mark Allen West, Jr. Mark joins his younger brother, best friend, and forever fan Daniel, who predeceased Mark by 19 months. Like Daniel, Mark carried with him the Serenity Prayer, and after Daniel’s death, had Daniel’s name inscribed above his heart. Mark became engaged, eight days before his death, to his high school sweetheart Lauren Leigh of Park City and Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Always planning and creating some new endeavor, Mark packed his 26 years with as much activity and achievement as humanly possible. His effervescent spirit infected all who knew him with love and fun. A courageous, able athlete, Mark pursued many passions — hunting, fishing, training his dog Sammy, and cooking — but especially loved his family and many friends most of all. Mark’s light shone brightly illuminating many happy stories that will be recounted forever until we meet up again someday. A celebration of his life was scheduled at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Lakewood Ranch, Florida at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. To send condolences please visit www.toalebrothers.com. Recognizing these barriers will foster constructive communication and compassion in the face of apathy. The third dragon is the Ideologies Dragon. These are umbrella-like beliefs that perpetuate climate-negative behavior. Ideologies are how we view the world and our role in it. They are influenced by our economic and political beliefs. This dragon can be difficult to confront but easy to identify. These persons might have a “worldview” that we’ll never run out of resources to harvest, and that it’s our right to take what we want. They might have a “suprahuman power” ideology that an omnipotent deity or Mother Nature is solely in charge, disconnecting humans from any responsibility. Others place overconfidence in a “technosalvation,” such as geoengineering that leads to inaction. The last species in this ideology genus is “system justification.” These people believe it’s best to keep business usual. How do we form ideologies? When we can’t directly see how our actions affect others, it’s easy to think our lifestyle is sustain- able. This view is reaffirmed by advertisement, media, friends, family, and sometimes, entire communities. Some ways to bridge the gap between our ideologies and their effect is constructive communication. Make sure to tailor your message to match the values of your audience. For example, someone might not understand the chemistry behind climate change but they might connect to saving money, being a good steward, pollution, and reducing waste. Recycle Utah, a community nonprofit and drop-off recycling center, provides these weekly tips. Visit recycleutah.org for more information.
