In the 2017 freestyle World Cup, Hall finished fifth out of the Americans, with Colby Stevenson, Nicholas Goepper, Gus Kenworthy and McRae Williams above him. He finished 20th overall. To make the Olympics, Hall would need to work his way into the top four on his team, or somehow earn his coaches’ trust enough to be granted a discretionary spot. Toward that end, Hall said the most important traits are consistency and inspiration. “You have to have the perfect mix of doing tricks you’re consistent at and taking risks,” he said. The qualifying process for the Olympics begins in December with the Dew Tour at Breckenridge, Colorado, where Hall’s ability to throw big, unexpected tricks could come in handy as he gears up for the biggest season of his life. He has already been invited to the X-Games, and is looking forward to another season with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s freeskiing team. But for now, Hall will wake up slowly in his Zurich home and take the bus downtown to skateboard with his friends, and bask in his free time. “Maddie played really well for them I thought,” Schuler said. “At the same time, I thought we missed a lot of opportunities, missed the net when we had some pretty good chances. Obviously, that affected the outcome of the game.” Barnes, the youngest player on the U.S. roster at 18, was only called up Oct. 28 and withdrew from Boston College to chase an Olympic berth. She scored in the first period of Tuesday night’s 8-2 win over Finland and scored her second goal in as many nights at 15:03 of the first skating into the left edge of the right circle to beat goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens for a 1-0 lead. Bozek, who didn’t dress against Finland, made it a 2-0 lead with a slap shot at 17:50 of the first. The Canadians answered by taking the first seven shots and outshooting the United States 15-9 in the second. Johnston got Canada on the board with a power-play goal 3:07 into the second. That was the only time Canada made the Americans pay for being short-handed in a game with lots of shoving between teams that know each other so well. The United States went up 3-1 when Coyne scored a power-play goal off a rebound 50 seconds into the third. Agosta pulled Canada within 3-2 with 4:29 left on a short-handed goal, but Carpenter answered with the Americans’ third power-play goal from the left circle 36 seconds later. In the other game Wednesday, Linda Valimaki scored the game-winner as Finland rallied with three goals in the third period to beat Sweden 3-1. Finland will play Canada on Friday followed by the United States and Sweden. Continued from B-3 full of talent, including leaders like Hale, Dennis and Helena Djunic, Troxel, Peterson, Katie Hill and Elise Beller. All told, the team has 18 seniors, including some that are swimming competitively for the first time. “I think that speaks a lot about our program,” Werner said. “That people want to be a part of what we are doing, be part of our family and see what we can do.” He said the large group of seniors are tight knit, and in the end, he said the team is theirs. “It’s their year, whatever they want they can do,” he said. “Hopefully we will just keep staying at the top.” Continued from B-1 is welcome to come. Topics of discussion will include updates on the coaching staff, practice schedule, etc. For more information email kristiesue@mac.com SKI CONDITIONING FITNESS PROGRAM Continued from B-1 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Pickleball Open Gym Wed. – Fri 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. 3v3 Basketball Tuesday 7:00-9:00 p.m. Drop-in Basketball Mon/Wed/Fri Noon-2:00 p.m. To include an upcoming sports event in the calendar, please send an email to Joe Lair at scoreboard@parkrecord.com Searching for new things to do? Season could be biggest ly he doesn’t remember being in the air, and his only memories of the trick itself are landing it and the fear he felt while initiating for the 30-yard jump. “For me, beforehand was really scary,” he said. “I kind of knew what I had to do. I had a vision for it but I wasn’t sure it was going to work. All I remember is coming out of the very end of it and landing on my feet.” While edits don’t likely add to Hall’s appeal in the eyes of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard team, Hall said events like the One Hit Wonder probably do, even though it’s technically a big air event and Hall primarily competes in slopestyle. But his 2016 competitive season was more influential. He won the Mammoth Moun- Continued from B-2 U.S. beats Canada on tour watching when Canada evened it up with a 5-1 win in Boston on Oct. 25. Since the Canadians rallied to win the 2014 Olympic gold medal 3-2 in overtime, the Americans have been on a tear winning five of six international events and now 10 of 13 games overall against their rivals. They are poised to meet again Sunday in the cup championship. Rooney from Andover, Minnesota, has been in net for both wins over Canada.
