The Egyptian Theatre manager said he and local artist Bill Kranstover will find the answer during the Who’s Art? gathering that will run from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, at the Park City Library. The free event is open to the public and will feature displays from artists as well as poetry and music, Barton said during an interview with The Park Record. “The gist is we ask anyone who is an artist to bring and show something original,” Barton said. “It can be a painting, a drawing, a poem, a dance or a sculpture or song, but it needs to be original.” Who’s Art? is an event that started back in the late 1980s. “It was organized by a few artists who would get together sporadically for a non-affiliated, non-commercial art party,” Barton said. “It was basically meant to celebrate originality in our area.” The event has been held at least once a decade since the 1980s, and it seemed the right time to bring it back, Barton said. “We used to do it at least once Continued From C-3 Kingston Trio will perform arranging our music for symphony orchestras because we were one of the first pop-vocal The L.A. Project ABC is an initiative that will become a roadmap for the future of arts and culture in Summit County. (See story on C-1). “Since I’m involved in that, we thought it would be a good time to do this and combine two big events,” Barton said. Artists of all levels are welcome to participate in Who’s Art? and there is no deadline for submissions. “People can just walk in with a piece of art or another type of acts to perform pops concerts,” Grove said. “We did between 15 to 25 of those concerts annually between 1980 until 2008.” Grove said he felt both comfortable and uncomfortable joining the group. “That felt good because I was very familiar with the music,” he said. “I had grown up learning every vocal and instrumental part of the songs.” The part that made him uncomfortable was the responsibility of joining a group that had grown to iconic stature in the history of American music. “That’s when I felt like a deer in the headlights,” Grove said with a laugh. “I worked like that deer waiting for the car to hit me until 1981, when we did what we refer to as the reunion show.” Grove becomes a member “Kingston Trio & Friends” aired on PBS and featured the late Mary Travers from Peter, Paul & Mary. It also welcomed to the stage Tommy Smothers from The Smother’s Brothers, Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac and, of course, all three of the Kingston Trio’s original members who played creation,” Barton said. “I love seeing people I never know who could sing, dance or paint to come and show their art to friends and neighbors. “Most of them aren’t professionals, but they have a piece of photography or sculpture that they have done. It’s exciting to see who shows up and what they bring.” Since the event is non commercial, the pieces won’t officially be on sale. “We just want to celebrate originality,” Barton said. Who’s Art? will be held in the Coffee Shop downstairs and on the patio of the Park City Library’s community room that is utilized by the Park City Film Series. “We are partnering with the Film Series on this,” Barton said. “They will have wine and beer for sale, but we won’t have any food. So people who come should eat at home.” There is no deadline for submissions. “It feels good to bring back a Park City tradition,” Barton said. “Our only wish is to hope someone will catch the enthusiasm and want to do it more often. We would love for someone else to take on the organizing side of this. We haven’t been doing a good-enough job to bring it out and show it off. “The event is called Who’s Art? and we answer that by saying ‘I’m Art,’ and that is shown through all the collected pieces that are on display.” Who’s Art?, a community art party, will be held from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, at Park City Library, 1255 Park Ave. The event is free and open to the public. together for the first time in 21 years. “The performance also included John Stewart, who replaced Dave Guard in 1961, and the trio’s current members -- Roger Gamble and myself,” Grove said. “I saw all three of the original members and John Stewart and wanted to take a back seat to it all.” Travers and Smothers saw what was happening and took Grove aside. “They said, ‘Hey, you belong here, because you’re adding a musical element that wasn’t in the group before,’” Grove said. “They were the ones who instilled in me the idea that I could work with this and not just work at it. “I’m also glad to say that my sister and I love each other dearly and she is one of my strongest supporters.” Kingston Trio will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 8, through Saturday, June 10, at the Egyptian Theatre, 328 Main St. Thursday tickets range from $29 to $45.
