On Wednesday morning, a select few veterans got the opportunity to come to the Utah Olympic Park to take part in a bobsled exhibition event. Racing down the concrete sliding track in a Comet bobsled, three veterans rode at a time, with a UOP bobsled pilot navigating the course. Air Force veteran Dale Haugen said nothing was going to stop him from participating in the bobsled exhibition. “When I saw it on our paperwork, I said, ‘I’m going,’ and I put that paperwork through so fast,” he said. “I thought it was going to be a bumpy ride, but it was awesome. You come around one curve and you’re already in another.” Robert Fecteau, a former Army medic who served in Afghanistan, rode at the back of the sled and said he enjoyed the unique experience. “I’m just an adrenaline junkie — I had to do it,” he said. “When they had the opportunity for us, of course I was going to take it. It was a little more intense than I thought it’d be. The first turn sucked the wind out of me and I realized we were going to be in for a good ride. The G forces were strong. Submitted by United States Tennis Association BASIN RECREATION The USTA announced that the Candy Erickson Tennis Center at the PC MARC in Park City has been awarded the highest USTA Facility honor as it has been named the 2016 Featured Facility. In its 35th year, the USTA Facility Awards program recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country. The Candy Erickson Tennis Center will be honored in New York City on Sept. 1 at an awards luncheon. The Candy Erickson Tennis Center at the PC MARC opened in late 2011 and is home Basin Rec maintains a system of trails in the Snyderville Basin. For information on the Echo Reservoir, please call 435-336-2247. WASATCH-CACHE NATIONAL FOREST The Heber-Kamas Ranger District maintains trails and campgrounds in the Uinta Mountains east of Kamas. The Mirror Lake Highway is now completely open. A recreational pass to use the forest is $6 for 1-3 days or $12 per week. All 2016 award winners will receive a wall plaque and an all-weather sign, which can be mounted at the facility. Certificates of award will be made available to park and recreation departments, schools and those professionals responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the facility.
