Sixteen million American sportsmen will take to the woods this fall; but about 400 of them won't eome back alive. Thousands of the nimrods will be Utah men and women. Many others, hailing from surrounding states, will come here to enjoy the, pastime. And judging by past years, a number of the 400 anticipated fall hunting fatalities will take place in this state. Carelessness, ignorance of .'hunting rules, and just plain negligence will kill the victims of the hunt. , deer-hunti- . ng both; then v the pressures upon Provo's first State Marriage Counselor, Richard L. Ten commandments of hunting safety which' every prospective nimrod should be required to learn have been compiled by Family Weekly Magazine, Sunday supplement of The Daily Herald, and will be released as part of a hunting safety feature next Sunday. Because Utah's general deer hunt begins next Saturday,; we are center has backlog of 90 cases, involving the future of 180 men and women and several hundred children. In addition, the center can expect a steady flow of new cases from Fourth District Court, serving Utah, Wasatch, Uintah and Duchesne Counties; Fifth District, Beaver, Iron, Juab, Millard, and Washington Counties Sixth District, Garfield, Kane, Piute, Sevier and Wayne, and Seventh District, Carbon, Emery, Grand, San Juan and Sanpete Counties. (Salt Lake has backlog of 380 & cases but has a staff of three counselors, under Boyd Oviatt, plus a consultant psychiatrist and psychologist.) Provo's Mr. Holbrook is well qualified for bis job. For the past five years, as psychiatric social worker nt Veterans Administration Neurological and Psychiatric Hospital, Ft. Douglas, he counseled patients A native and their families. The South Dakota governor ordered the offenders arrested with the statement, "We don't want It takes that running loose in our state. Such incidents blacken the name of all the folks who live in the state." We're referring to Utah's Ezra Taft Benson, now completing his fifth year as Secretary of Agriculture. Despite constant criticism from politicians not in harmony with his policies, Mr. Benson continues on doggedly working for the man he believes to be among the most the important in the world 1 - farmer. His job is extremely difficult because of many factors. The farmer, for example, faces monumental problems of expansion of markets and bargaining power. He's caught in the midst of a technological revolution which has moved people off the land, decreased the number of cultivated acres, arid greatly upped production. There are problems for which immediate solution seems utterly impossible. While Mr. Benson has yearned for the time when he can return e to his duties as an apostle for the churcn, he has stayed on as agricultural secretary because the president of the United States wants him to stay on. President Eisenhower has called him a great American and a fine secrefull-tim- tary of agriculture. These little foreign cars zipping around are good, yet our stupid American car makers still strive for bigger, speedier more expensive cars on the theory that the only market in this country is a snob market. The only advantage in riding in the Cadillac that I could see was that Mrs. Daynes was prettier than the doc. I have made it a rule to refuse all speaking engagements, and the reason I accepted this one was that I was tired of Theron Luke crowing over me because he had spoken to the Fortnighters, and I had not. It gave me great satisfaction when the ladies told me my talk was almost as good as Luke's. There was another thing that interested me about that group. They told me they would courteously refrain from smoking if tobacco smoke bothered me. In Utah they usually tell me in advance that I must not smoke. That was a real switch. (To be honest I think few of the ladies did smoke.) MURIEL LAWRENCE Last week I wrote about a father who punished an older son for persistent disobedience. -- well. Protesting, "It isn't fair!" the boy demanded the same punishment for a younger brother whose disobedience had been less stubborn. The father complied against his own judgment of 'fairness" and as a result, developed intense irritation with himself and everyone else. This is a common experience of parents. Misbehaving children often demand identical punishment of brothers and sisters who have not committed identical offenses just as they demand the same privileges of the other children. What do we do when we have allowed Norman to persuade us to impose a penalty on Ted we feel is unjust? We reverse it. At least this seems to be the stabilizing answer. We return to the point where we made the mistake of permitting Norman's view of justice to overwhelm our one. After releasing Ted from .punishment, we say to Norman, "After thinking hard, I've decided it isn't fair to punish Ted as I punished you. You disobeyed three times; he disobeyed once. As he behaved differently from you, his punishment is different, too." Does Norman blow up? We say ''strong In as a lion" or courts throughout the world, the lion was used on shields and crests and banners to indicate power. Probably, this was not because anybody could prove that a lion could defeat all other animals in combat, but because lions strike such terror in man and in other beasts. The ancient Egyptians believed the lion was sacred, and during the time when Christ was bora lions lived in many parts of Europe. By the year 500 however, they had all been killed. Today the only places where lions are plentiful are in Africa and in one region of India. Lions are members of the cat family. The average length of a grownup lion is about nine feet and they weigh between 400 to 500 pounds. The males are larger than the females. People who hunt lions can always tell whether they are tracking a male or female by the size of the tracks. The male has larger front feet than the female The lion's voice is a roar or a growl.
