C, called by various people, "Uncle Sam's closet," "the nation's attic," and "the world's storehouse of scientific information." Just how many is a matter of debate, since a "skeleton" may mean anything from a skull to some miscellaneous bones from which scien-tis- ts have reconstructed a dinosaur. The Smithsonian, undoubtedly the most fabulous museum on earth, has 17,000 human skulls, either on display or in storage, plus hundreds of brains, representing all the races and times of man, in its Hall of Racial Groups. "If I hadn't seen the poor creatures with my own eyes, I would never have believed it," she wrote. Another lady, outraged by the exhibits, told the Smithsonian director: "God will punish you. Killing savages and stuffing them like wild animals!"
