High Country Fishing? us Those of planning high country fishing trips are and still going to do some waiting. We refer to the Uintas of good weather before it looks like about two more weeksfeet are fit for fishing, above 9,000 any of the basins traveling or camping. Your scribbler flew over the whole range Thursday and to put it bluntly "it ain't spring up there." Nearly all the lakes above 9,000 are both ice and snow covered. Drifts at lower elevations and both drifts and solid snow cover are still blocking the trails. Mirror Lake looks like December instead of June, Trial (which you can now heavy drifts' cover the road from reach and was this morning about one third free of ice) over the pass to Mirror. The Granddaddy and nearly all the other lakes at the head of Rock Creek are still ice covered and unapproachable. Same is true of everything going east through Five Kidney and Points on the Yellowstone, Atwood, Painters, on the Whiterocks Fox on the Uinta, Chapeeta, Queeant and so on down and back the perimeter of this beautiful range of hills. In The Offing Good weather in the offing will mean that some of the lower elevation basins now locked in will be reached and fishajale by the July 4th holiday. We'd include Brown Duck, Mirror, Chain, Spirit and maybe a few others in this guess. Best advice would be not to plan a trip up there anywhere before July 1, and surely not into the higher country before a week or 10 days longer. Reason? Well, many trails will still be snowblocked until then, there is yet no horse feed at all, no dry camping areas and so on. Tracks in the snow showed where three hardy individuals had hiked the three miles or so from Moon to Circ Lake and there was evidence in the snow by the ice covered lake that they'd caught and cleaned some fish. Betcha they earned them, and this lake is in relatively low coun- try out there. So goes the fishing and extremely high water year. One thing for sure it can't help but get better and the more water the better the fishin'. Question Box Can set lines be legally used on any Utah water? Only on three, these being the Colorado, Green and San Juan rivers, and you may use any number of hooks when "set-linin- g" in these three waters. To legally angle on all other waters must I hold the single pole in my hands? Either that, or attend your pole as the law was liberalized some two years ago. "Attend," under the law, means that the angler must be within 10 feet of the equipment he is using at all times. Some say this sounds silly that they see no difference in taking a it nap while reclining a few feet from the pole or leaving while walking a few feet further to camp for a bite to eat. Seems to this comer the liberalized regulation of "attending" the pole ia OK. Gives the bait dunker a chance to relax and still doesn't open the door to unrestricted set line fishing. The ruling is based on the premise that we do not have enough fish for unrestricted set lining, on the theory that we go fishing to fish, and still gives the leeway to relax tired hands or back while staying near our equipment. Shrimp Is Legal Is shrimp legal bait? Yes, from the common small native variety seldom used to the .canned or frozen type found at the grocers. Experience and hearsay would limit its value to fishing for channel catfish and other warm-watfishes. Either the smaller shrimp or larger prawn (cut into two pieces) are good baits for taking the channel catfish from Utah Lake. Do I need a license to catch trash fish? Legislative law provides that a proper license be possessed and visibly displayed by any resident when taking fish in any manner, whether angling with a pole, seining, and no matter the kind of fish. Any resident 12 years of age and older must have said pr6per license, must have same. and all Is seven inches the minimum legal size for game fish? It is for trout, except for mackinaw or lake trout which must be 15 inches in length before keeping. It is highly unlikely you'll catch mackinaw anywhere else in the state except at Fish Lake and Bear Lake. The minimum length of all other trout is seven inches (so called legals), although a regulation now two years! old allows three trout under seven inches in any possession limit. Reason for this ruling was to allow keeping and use of these smaller trout from any waters where conditions determine they'll not grow much larger even when several years old. Bass must be ten inches in length before they may be legally taken and kept. -- er " non-residen- Provo Tennis Tourney Reaches Quarterfinals ts 1 - ....
