Show SUNDAY HERAU) Hill Prince Roars To Victory Outdoor Rouitiliip Opponent It's high time now to begin to get serious about seeing more of the lakes' and streams for another season. Too much of days behind with an occasional rabbit hunt, but mostly the dreaming of last year's hunting and fishing. A feller begins to wonder if it is ever going to be open season again. Of course, we let a little steam off on a trip into Idaho for trout. Doc Rulon Johnson, Mrs. B., and yours truly had a try at the Snake river a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful day, nice trip; the fish were unco. operative. . Near Duchesne , Then to Borham reservoir near Duchesne for our open1. Anyway you iook at it, we are going to learn to take more pleasure in the going and less pleasure in the taking. Guess we'll also reluctantly learn that trout aren't the only game fish. When you see the joy of the youngsters, as well as many of our new citizens from oher states, pulling out perch and really liking it, a feller wonders if our own "jerking up" wasn't a bit off the track. Stretch Run - Y By OSCAR FRALEY VirBaltimore, May 20 (U.R) Hill ginia's rugged Prince smashed mighty Middleground's chances of" joining the triple crown champions of the turf when he ran away from the Texas terror in the stretch Saturday to win the 74th runlng of the famed Preakness Stakes. Looking the Kentucky Derby champion In the eye as they raced almost head and head at the top of the stretch. Hill Prince proved his two former victories over Middleground were no flukes when he accepted the and finished five challenge lengths on top of the King Ranch comet in a whirlwind drive to the wire. Hill Prince's time for the mile and glamor galThat wasn't lop was 1:59 close to Ca pot's 1949 record of 1:56 but it was plenty good five enough to pulverize hisblack-eyed rivals in the run for the Susans. Balkan Dead Last Five lengths back, of the second place Midleground' came C. V. Whitney's Dooly, who took third money away from his more highly-regardstablemate, Mr. Trouble. Trailing them home came Mrs. James Carson's Kinsman while dead last Was Mrs. W. H. Labrofs Balkan. For the burly Hill Prince, a son of usually Prlncequillo, who took the lead going down the back stretch long before they hit the mile run, it was an impressive triumph and made him the second Virginia horse to come home on top in the stake's history. Not since Knight of Ellerslie beat them all to the wire 'in 1884 had a colt from the old dominion been able to win the huge silver Wood-law- n trophy. But Hill Prince had it today, over a slow track which approached being muddy. And his triumph under a canny ride by heady Eddie Arcaro gave the - " . ng ' late-runni- ng Good Thing Close By Threatened Rain Most of us will stay close to home. A man who claimed to know once said, "The Good Maker doesn't count a man's fishin' days against him." I humbly add that I've never spent a penny at the old game that wasn't well spent. " Yours for fun, Casey. The holiday crowd of 30,000 hovered under lowering shies, which threatened rain but never produced, had faith in Hill Prince and his swarthy' little rider and they didn't let them down. It looked, for a while, as if Middleground was going to prove his derby claim to greatness when he ran at Hill Prince as they reached the mile pole. But heady Eddie nudged the cavalier colt with his bat and the big fellow gathered himself and crashed through the stretch to win going away. Returns Favor Middleground had beaten Hill Prince in the Kentucky Derby, and the Virginia colt had returned the favor in the Wood Memorial and the Wither mile. But this meant more than either of those two defeats to the Texas colt. His daddy, Bold Venture, had won the derby ana the Preakness in 1936. And a stable-mat- e. Assault, had added the Bel mont stakes for the triple crown in 1946. King Ranch, that sprawling cattle empire, thought it had another triple crown champ in its derby star. But they reckoned without the barrel house bay owned by Chris Chenery, New York utility mag nate. Breaks from Gate ror Hill Prince didn't get off in the ruck this time. He was last' but riaht with the bunched field as they hammered out of Jhe gate with Mr. Trouble on top. By the time they hit the half mile pole, where Balkan had taken over the pace with Mr. Trouble second, Hill Prince was only a length back of the lead. Then the bay colt from Virginia started to move, flashing past Mr. Trouble and the fading Balkan to pound out a three-lenglead by the time mile they hit the three-quartpole. Mr. Trouble still was second there, but Middlegr6und was moving, too,. Just a head back and starting nis move. At the, mile It still was Hill Prince, but now he was on top of the rose run winner by only a length and Midleground was effort making a determined under the urging of little Willie Boljind. Arcaro nudged him once and the big fellow started g moving again. For seconds they ran in lockstep, and theri Hill Prince galloped off by himself to bear his blue and brown colors under the wire for an fasy victory. To his backers, the favored Hill ' Prince returned, $3.40 and $2.4(1, boosting hit earnings $56,-1to $181,740. Middleground returned $3.40 for place. The main event, pitting "Gen tleman Dave" Haddock of Wayne, Mich., against Sugy Hayamaka, will include regular, rassling and brawling. The Haddock-Hayamamatch is a grudge affair and that means both grapplers will be out for blood. The first fall will be wrestled under regular mat rules. The second will be wrestled un der rules. which means a grapplef must render his opponent unconscious or make him give up. In other words, there can be no pin falls. Given Choice If a third fall is necessary, the matman registering the fastest time in the two previous falls, will be given his choice for the third and deciding fall. And, if last week's match between Haddock and Hayamaka can be taken as any criterion, Monday night's brawl between these two guys should be terrific Ju-jit- su catch-as-catch-c- ka an may be entered until the time of the show.
