Novel approach Trio of organizations unite for 'War and Peace' concert Amber Foote HERALD CORRESPONDENT T Utah Premiere I Brass is teaming up guests Utah Light Opera and Spotlight Review Dance Studio to present a finale to the jbrass band's regular concert season. The concert, appropriately pamed "War and Peace," is a musical and visual journey exploring the themes of war and peace through history and will be performed at the Covey Center for the Arts on Friday. The idea for the concert (was first conceptualized in the mind of Alan Boyer, artistic director for Utah Premiere Brass, more than 15 years ago when he was directing several brass bands in the United Kingdom. He has lived in the United States for the past 11 years, and it has.taken that jlong for the concert "War and I i Paul Pollei of Provo was recently honored by the Music Teachers National Association as an MTNA Foundation Fellow at the 2009 MTNA National Conference in Atlanta. "This is the first time in 15 years that I've had the ensembles, that I've had the program, and I've had the facility available to do this concert in an amazing way," Boyer said. "I hope that people will come along to experience what I've been planning for so many years now." "War and Peace," Boyer said, is UPB's biggest performance to date and will combine impressive music from the brass ensemble with vocals from soloists and choral pieces from Utah Light Opera, as well as dance numbers from Spotlight Review Dance Studio and projected images on stage representing the world in times of tumult and peace. "There is no way that anyone can go away and not be stunned by the quality performance of the soloists, the choir and the brass," Boyer said. "The combination of those will provide some very special moments." The concert will begin with Gustav Hoist's "Mars: The Bringer of War" and culminates with Karl Jenkins's "The Armed Man." Interspersed will be numbers accompanied by Utah Light Opera performing "Pax" from Bernstein's "Mass," and selections from Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte." "The 'Cosi fan tutte' is a scene where the soldiers are leaving for war and leaving their loved ones behind," said David Schmidt, founder director of Utah Light Opera, "and then the Pax is a piece of peace and praise. Combined, Utah Premiere Brass and Utah Light Opera is a lot of power, emotionally and acoustically. It's a lot of sound and a lot of power, and it reaches right into your soul and grabs you."
