Miller told men's coach Phil McNichol of his decision following a meeting at the headquarters of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association this week, the federation said in a news release Saturday. "Bode is a great athlete and we hope he will continue to have athletic success," U.S. Alpine director Jesse Hunt said in the release. "We had a serious discussion with Bode about his responsibilities as a team member, and he later advised us he was choosing not to join the team." The fiercely independent Miller has often been at odds with the association and there had been rumblings that he would leave the team for several years. He has been a part of the U.S. team for 11 years, but will travel and train independently if he competes in the 2008 World Cup season, the asr sociation said. Arena Football Turnovers hurt Blaze in loss in K.C. KANSAS CITY Kansas City quarterback Raymond Philyaw threw for 263 yards and eight touchdowns as the Brigade defeated the Utah Blaze, 6041, on Saturday night at Kemper Arena. Wide reciever Boo Williams had three touchdown grabs and rookie Charles Frederick added two receiving and one rushing score. Blaze quarterback Joe Germaine had a horrific start to the game throwing four interceptions before getting on track and finishing with 325 yards and five scores. Siaha Burley had 11 receptions for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Next week the Brigade (64) travel to New York to take on the Dragons while the Utah Blaze host the Las Vegas Gladiators. ) (5-6- NHL Playoffs Senators down Sabres in 20T BUFFALO, N.Y. Joseph Corvo scored with a shot 4:58 into the second overbouncing time, lifting the Ottawa Senators to a 3 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals on Saturday night. Ottawa overcame its own history winning the first two games of a series for the first time and fought off the disappointment of Daniel Briere's tying goal with 5.8 seconds left in regulation that forced overtime. Daniel Alf redsson, Wade Redden and Mike Fisher also scored for the Senators, who improved to 10-- 2 this postseason and moved within two wins of their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals. Ottawa pulled out the victory after spotting the Sabres a lead 7 minutes in. The next two games of the best of seven series are in Ottawa on Monday and Wednesday. Jason Spezza had three assists, including set-- . ting up the winner. Spezza beat Chris Drury on a faceoff to the right of the Buffalo net and drew the puck back to Corvo. Stepping into the middle, Corvo blasted a knuckler, that bounced once and skipped past Ryan Miller. d Sabres continued their uncharThe acteristic stretch of inconsistent play following a 2 loss on Thursday. The Senators then limited the Sabres to six shots through the first 19 minutes of the third, but couldn't pull the victory out in regulation; arena to their Briere lifted fans in the sold-ofeet when he tied the game, converting a loose puck that dribbled to him at the right post. The puck got loose after Tim Connolly's shot from the left circle deflected off defender Chris Phillips. It was reminiscent of the overtime-forcin- g goal Chris Drury scored with 7.7 seconds left in Buffalo's win over the New York Rangers in Game series. 5 of their second-rounOttawa's Anton Vermette had two opportunities to win it in the first overtime. Set up in the slot by Spezza, Vermette's first shot was stopped by Miller. Vermette got the rebound but missed the open right side when his backhander slid directly into Miller's pads, leading Vermette to slap his stick on the ice in frustration. Miller finished with 28 saves, but allowed four goals for the third straight time. Ottawa's Ray Emery stopped 34 shots and improved to 14 in playoff overtime games. The Senators continue to erase the memories of past playoff disappointments, including last year, when the Sabres needed only five games to eliminate them in the second round. All this Buffalo firepower, and little to show for it from a team that led the NHL with 308 goals 40-fo- 4-- 2-- 0 -- -- al d and 53 wins.
