Ned and Kate also meet a scarred, man who informs them that he has "killed children before" but has no desire to do so now and that they have "blundered into a ... very old story" and should leave. Leaving becomes problematic, however, as Ned begins to have run-in- s with wolves, a great white boar, and the enigmatic stranger who is always searching for his rival Cadell whom he hopes to kill and the woman who is life and breath to both, YsabeL As the story progresses, Ned begins to discover unnerving powers in himself whose uses he doesnt understand and can scarcely control and he becomes ever more deeply entangled in something he only slowly begins to understand. White's fore- word to his wife Katharine's posthumously published book of essays on gardening, "Onward and Upward in the Garden," is the most beautiful essay ever written by an American man for his spouse. But Calvin Trillin's "About esh Alice," a small say about his wife, may well be its equal. Anyone who has n read any of Trillin's books will know Alice, his beloved, intelligent, funny, devoted and deeply compassionate wife. In this book, Alice ceases to be just Trillin's wiser foil, and comes into her own. "Alice and Bud are like Burns and Allen," reports one friend, "except she's George and he's Grade." There are laughs aplenty in "About Alice" but much more of tenderness and of the rare and deeply satisfying love of a man and a woman who really are perfect for each other.
