Andrea Teague DAILY HERALD performance Valley showcase musical talent in Utah Valley, as seven young musicians are set to perform. The Young Artists Concert is an annual event which allows talented children and young adults to play for a large audience. This year's performers range in age from 11 to 20, and will play the piano, violin, cello and French horn. Scott Jackman, president and business manager for the Utah Valley Symphony, said having the young artists show their stuff gives support for youth learning the arts. "I think it shows the importance of having the youth get involved with the arts, and it helps us show how that can happen," he said. Jackman also said this concert gives people in the area an opportunity to see young local talent. When that happens, he said, it can help build up a desire in young people to engage in artistic pursuits. "It allows people to see some of the best young artists in the valley and what they can do," he said. "It really helps instill the arts in the youth." To be selected for this Tonight's concert, each performer had to go through two rounds of auditions in September. The age categories for the auditions are kindergarten to sixth grade, seventh grade to 11th grade, and 12th grade to age 25. The young performers selected for the concert are Verina Chen, 12, from Provo; Anna Bowman, 15, from Lindon; Jentry Fairbanks, 20, from Orem; Danielle Smith, 14, from Provo; Mayu Green-halg15, from Manti; Sherlee Olson, 17, from Lindon and; Jim Lu, 11, from Orem. Lu, son of Kening and June Lu, has been playing the piano for five years. Lu performed in the Young Artists Concert last year, and said that he's happy to be back. "I played last year, and I thought it was fun, so I decided to do it this year," he said. Last year's experience, he said, was new for him, and let him find out what it's like to play in the same concert as a full symphony orchestra. "Listening to the orchestra was very exciting," he said. "I wasn't used to it." Leading off this year's event, the Symphony will perform the Overture to "Russian and Ludmilla" by Mikhail Glinka. Based on a fairytale poem by Pushkin, the piece tells the story of a hero, Russian, who uses a magic ring to wake the heroine, Ludmilla, from an evil spell The young artists will perform next, with the program including the following selections: "Hungarian Fantasy" by Franz Liszt, Mozart's "Piano Concerto in A," "Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Second Movement" by Henryk Wieniawski, "French Horn Concerto No. 1 in Major, First Movement" by Richard Strauss and Mendelssohn's "Piano Concerto in D Minor, Third Movement." |
