A selective group of Divine Comedy performers will appear at the SCERA for a pair of shows on Saturday at 8 and 10 p.m. Titled "Lord of the Engagement Ring," the show is named after one of the group's most popular parodies. Divine Comedy is a club at BYU, which means only students are allowed to participate. Once students graduate, they are no longer able to perform in the troupe. However, Robert Scott Marsh, a Divine Comedy veteran, thought the very best possible show would include a combination of former and current cast members performing a type of "Greatest Hits" show which would then be filmed for a DVD release and make the group a load of money. "Yeah,-- think I'll get rich," Marsh said. "Just kidding. Actually, I just want to show it to my mom." Marsh said he first got involved in Divine Comedy about six years ago, when he went to see his brother-in-laperform with the troupe. "I thought they were pretty funny," he said. "But I thought it would be so much funnier if I were in it. And, lo and behold, it was true." Marsh has been working to put together this show since he graduated last April. He contacted many of the former cast members, but also asked a couple members of the current cast to join. Alex Kirry, a senior at BYU from Port Ludlow, Wash., said this show brings a little more pressure than usual because the performance will be recorded for posterity. "We haven't really had much rehearsal," Kirry said. "But it's better that way. More spontaneous. More room for audience interaction and stuff like that." Marsh said that rehearsing is not the hard part. Everyone catches on pretty quickly, and things just seem to fall into place. The challenge is coming up with skits. "It is crazy," he said. "Everyone has this desperate need for attention. I mean, that's why we do this, and we're discussing ideas, and everyone's getting louder and louder, and talking over each other, and I w , 2f i 1 special performance at Courtesy photo a a BYU dub that is putting on the SCERA Theatre in Orem. The cast of Divine Comedy, through all the madness ... a show is bora." Kirry said the show will highlight approximately 20 skits from the Divine Comedy repertoire. His favorites include "Cougar Raps," about two white guys trying to start a rap club at BYU, and the aforementioned "Lord of the Engagement Ring." "People just really like that one," Kirry said. "I don't know why. I guess it's because Mormons think it's really funny." Marsh said the hardest part . about organizing this event was finding a place to perform but he couldn't be happier with the SCERA Theatre. "It's one of the best venues around," he said. "And I love a good balcony." Divine Comedy just keeps getting better, Marsh said, and If you go Divine Comedy When: Saturday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Where: SCERA Theatre, 745 S. State St., Orem Tickets: $6 adults, $4 children; call 225-256- 9 or 225-ARTor purchase at the box office 45 minutes before showtime differs from a lot of Mormon comedy by actually being funny. "It's true," he said. "And I have to tell you, it's all because of me. I'm the guiding light of this group. Without me, they'd be nothing. NOTHING! Just kidding."
