Show DAILY HERALD 14 Thursday, October 28, 2004 INSIDE VALLEY PREPS Taking stock of the 4A playoffs JFE-ej- a presidential race is too close to call. on what poll you believe, John Kerry is ahead, but before Kerry can start packing for the White House, another poll will come out with President Bush ahead in the race. But there is another contest that is proving to be even more difficult to predict. Since polls are always used to predict the election, I figured why not try a poll to see who is going to win the 4A football state championship? If you have a copy of the 4A bracket and you're having a bracket contest, look no further I've got your answers. Actually, the coaches have the answers. Since teams like Box Elder and Mountain Crest don't get a chance to see Springville or Timpview, and since Orem and Lone Peak haven't seen Highland or Bountiful play, have polled six coaches from Region 4 and 5 and six coaches from Region 6 and 7. Forget the suspense, the first question on my list was. who will win the 4A title? I ; figured either Timpview or Springville would be the most popular response. American Fork VOLLEYBALL: The Cavemen (9-- 7-- & swept Spanish Fork and Timpview in their final two matches to secure the second seed from Region 6 Thev got the extra help they needed from Payson, which topped Springville on Tuesday to earn a play-igame with Mountain View for the final berth into the i ; n state tournament. Lehi SOCCER: Senior goalie Beth Worthingon fin- ished the season with 11 shutouts, tops in 3A and second most shutouts in the state. Lehi finished the season with a record after losing to Park Citv in the state 3A semifinals. 14-- 5 Lone Peak 's ' U-1- 8 I' Springville and Timpview to know someone else is the team to beat. Coaches I talked to pointed out that Highland is the only team to have beaten 5A power Skyline and in its only loss of t he season (to Olympus), the Rams played without quarterback Bo McNally. One coach said what seemed to be the theme of this year's playoffs: "There's Highland. Timpview and Springville and t hen t here's probably not a lot of difference between everyone else" Next question on my list was, "Who is the best player in the state you have seen or played against?" Deciding who the best player in the state is proved to be more difficult than predicting a winner. . Hunter running back Matt Asiata. Highland quarterback McNally and Timpview quarter Buzz! Mountain View FOOTBALL: The Bruins will be making their first playoff appearance since 1999. the longest absence from the post seison of teams making it this year. Thanks to winning a coin toss, the Bruins ) will be just one of two teams with losing records to host a, first round game. Hillcrest ) also hosts a first round playoff game. Mountain View hosts East on Friday at 4 p.m. The Bruins have won four of their last five games. ley Havili. One coach said, "Asiata is the real deal. He has speed, but he can still run you over. Harvey Unga isn't far behind." Next question. "Who is this year's sleeper?" What team is most likely to go on a roll? Survey says: Orem. Even though the Tigers t stumbled in their last V. 1 Garrett Gee, Paul Jake Larsen. Morgan Lyman and Michael Wilson played with the Utah Rangers, a club soccer team that won the State CupThe team's other players come from Mountain View. Orem, Timpanogos. Pleasant Grove and West Jordan High Schools. SOCCER: Cory Cosgrave, Groesbeck. Blaine Hale. . Prep Points . Devils were now in the opposite bracket of Highland Baring a stunning upset, Springville can sit back and watch Timpview and Highland beat each other up while one , eliminates the other. Who is the best player in the state? I reserve the right to change my mind at the end of the playoffs because I will see Mountain Crest on Friday and Highland on Saturday and I haven't seen many teams outside of Utah County. But this year, my vote goes to Trevyn Smith, who needs 183 yards to reach 2,000 yards for the season. Who is the sleeper? I agree with the coaches on this one. Orem is my pick for a team that could surprise, but what worries me is the Tigers open the playoffs against Bountiful, the defending 4A state back Stephen Covey each picked up two votes. Timpview's Luke Ashworth and Harvey Unga each picked up a single vote, as did Trevy n Smith from Springville. Box Jordan BrownMbuntain Crest's Brady Zimmerman and Cottonwood running back Stan- Neil Warner The News and notes from around Utah County high school sports: How about Highland. That's right, six coaches picked : Highland to win:uit all. u r: c i unjjview ctiiu opi uigvme eacii received three votes. This mav come as a relief to game-agains- Mountain View, the 7 champs were the popular pick to make a run at the title. Orem picked up three votes. Box Elder and American Fork had two each and Bonneville. Bountiful, Murray, East and Mountain View each had one vote. One coach said. "I like Orem. They're well coached and they're a team that I think can still score if the weather is bad." Before I go, I thought I would add my vote to the poll. Who is the team to beat? Clearly it has to be Springville. Not only are the Red Devils the only undefeated team in 4A, check the brackets. One of the first things Springville pointed out after beating Timpview was the Red champs. If I had to pick another team it would be American Fork. The Cavemen have a balanced ... rushing attack and what I like the most, a defense that is peaking-, For the rest of the teams in the playoffs, those no one is talking about, don't worry there is a reason why you haven't seen Dan Jones and Associates do a poll on the high school football playoffs. The margin of error is too , big. I Neil Warner can be reached at nwarnerheraldextra.com.
