The Jazz rank 15th in the league with 42.6 rebounds per game, but they outre-boun- d their opponents by more than five rebounds per game. The most impressive statistic is that the Jazz are ranked first in the NBA in assists per game, at 24.4. That number has soared since the Jazz inserted Matt Harprlng and Calbert Cheaney into the starting lineup, two players who can actually catch the ball and make shots on passes from John Stockton and Karl Malone. Malone is averaging 18.4 ppg and grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game this season. Although the points per game average is his lowest since his rookie season and the rebound number is his lowest ever, he's still getting the job done when it ' counts. Harpring has been spectacular for the Jazz, averaging 17.0 ppg and pulling down 6.9 rpg. Andrei Klrllenko is third on the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg and also grabs 5.5 rpg. Stockton is scoring 1 1.9 ppg and dishing out 7.5 assists per game. Greg Ostertag is also playing more minutes per game than he has since 1998. He's earning those 20-plminutes, too, averaging 5.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 1.8 blocks per game. Woodberry, Tuesday, praised the decision to play those who, at the time, were doing well. "It was a good coaching decisionplay " the guys that are playing good Woodberry said. Cleveland said Woodberry will start tonight. Cleveland said returned missionaries, freshmen and junior college transfers, alike, must adjust to the Division I game. With Woodberry, Cleveland cited n road BYU's long, excursions as an extra obstacle he's faced during the transition. "Not many people are playing five out of their first six on the road, brand new to a system and replacing a point guard who was the assist leader in the school, the conference, and one of the top in the nation," Cleveland said. Cleveland said Woodberry is still grasping BYU's defensive system; On offense, Cleveland wants Woodberry to break down defenders with the dribble, then distribute the ball. But Woodberry keeps jumping in the air to pass, Cleveland said. Woodberry sees his struggles as a slump, one from which he thinks he's recovered. He said he's been shooting well in practice the past two days. He said poor shooting sidetracked his focus, but that, too, is better now. Woodberry said the speed of Division I games seemed "a little fast" when BYU opened the but he's grown used to it. early-seaso- sea-so- if i n, Mainly, Woodberry sounds like he's just trying to adjust to his role. Cleveland was eager to have a point guard who could shoot well. But scoring is not why Cleveland asked him to come to BYU. Tm on a different team now where I don't have to do as much scoring," Woodberry said. "We've got great shooters and great scorers. I think that was the problem. I was trying to put too much pressure on myself to score and that kind of threw me into a slump. "I just need to relax." Cleveland said Woodberry has a good rapport with his teammates and he's eager to get his confidence back. The coaching staff will be patient while Wood- berry adjusts. But if Woodberry struggles, others will play, Cleveland said. "He has to quit pressing and feeling like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders" Cleveland said. I v. , ' ' - .'
