Show Friday, October 18, 2002, THE DAILY HERALD, (wwHarkTheHerald.com), Provo, Utah a million dollars in Montana in the process. Vin. Diesel, Barry Pepper, Seth Green and1 John Malkovich star, each trying to convince us they're mobsters, an idea you won't believe for a second. The dialogue and acting are laughable, and the film takes itself too seriously. Not atrocious, but not worth going out of your way MOVIES Continued from C8 their characters. C sloppily written BARBERSHOP (1 hr., 42 min.; PG-1- 3 for a lot of mid-levprofanity some sexual diaand one logue) Surprisingly gentle and comedy about a barbershop that serves as emotional cornerstone of a Chicago neighborhood, and the financial troubles that may force it to close. Rappers Ice Cube and Eve are among the stars, as is comedian Cedric the Entertain- for, either. C- ULO & STITCH (1 hr., 25 min.; PG for mild sct-f- i violence) Funny, fast-paceanimated Disney film about a destructive alien who is adopted by a precocious Hawaiian girl. Charming and original characters, a mildly strange sense of humor and a healthy dose of good cartooniness mean that while it's not an instant classic, it is well worth a few viewings. B MINORITY REPORT (2 hrs., 25 for scattered profanity, min.; some strong violence, brief sexuality) Oscar-bai- t Spielberg and Spielberg finally collaborate on a film that is as and t entertainvisionary as it is ing. Set in the future, it concerns a system where murders are predicted before and thus prevented they can happen, with Tom Cruise playing the head of the division. The finale is not as would as the first lead you to expect, and there are plot holes. But overall, the engaging story and exciting presentation make it one of the year's better er; there are some actors, too, including Keith David and Anthony s Anderson. There are some in the plot, but you forgive it when you realize how pleasant the whole cop-out- PG-1- 3 thing is. B CHARLY (1 nr., 44 min.; PG for some very mild sexual innuendo, thematic elements) Likable adaptation of Jack Weyland's romance novel, about a Mormon boy who falls in love with a girl. Heather Beers is splendid as the title character, full of charm, energy and wit; Jeremy Elliott is much less satisfactory as her counterpart. The movie's sentiments are lovely, and for the most part they are expressed well. B- strait-lace- thought-provokin- g flat-ou- d g e d s THE FOUR FEATHERS (2 hrs., 5 films. for some partial nudity, min.; PG-1- 3 brief sexuality, a lot of violence and grisly images) Ineffective movie boasting a good performance from Heath Ledger and lovely cinematography. Ledger plays a British soldier circa 1884 who is fearful of going to war, resulting in his being branded a coward. In the book, he sets out to prove to his friends that he is no coward; in the film, he just sort of sets out, with unclear motives or intentions. The film has a lot of bulk, but no depth. C- GUYS (1 hr., 32 KNOCKAROUND min.; R for frequent harsh profanity, a lot of violence) Ridiculous little gangster film about sons and nephews of Mafia kingpins who seek to establish themselves as real "knockaround guys," losing half A-- MILE (1 hr., 52 for some profanity, min.; including two uses of the Big One) Well-actesurprisingly funny film about the aftermath of a young woman's death and its impact on her fiance and parents. Jake Gyllen-haa- l, Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon are fantastic in the lead roles, playing their characters with honesty and emotion. The film examines death, but in a gentle way MOONLIGHT PG-1- 3 that will uplift the audience, not depress it. A- - MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (1 hr., 30 min.; PG for one profanity and some mild sensuality) Thoroughly charming family comedy about an woman of Greek average-lookin- g descent (Nia Vardalos, who also wrote the film) who falls in love with k a (John Corbett), much to the dismay of her parents. Andrea Martin is hysterical as one of many nosy aunts and uncles, and Vardalos" humor is sweet and only mildly ironic. The cast Is huge, and there is character and humor on every face. And in the end, it's a passionate ode to how wonderful having a huge, insane family is. This is one of the funniest, most joyous movies 9:45 SAT: 12D5 2:25 4:50 7:25 9 45 Slflt 4:50 invented comedy. A RED DRAGON (2 hrs., 4 min.; R for scattered harsh profanity, abundant blood and gore, some nonsexual nudity, brief sexuality) Effective, ominous prequel to "Silence of the Lambs" that, although taking place before that film, relies on our knowledge of It to scare us once again with Hannibal Lecter (played as always with unblinking maniacal glee by Anthony Hopkins). Edward Norton is sadly out of his element as an FBI agent seeking Lecter's help to catch a killer, but Ralph Fiennes is wonderfully eerie as the killer himself. A thrilling, compelling film. B SCOOBY-DO(1 hr., 27 min.; PG for one mild profanity, some crude humor, comic violence) It could have provided nostalgia for people who grew up with the cartoon, or it could have mocked it (a la the "Charlie's Angels" and "Brady Bunch" movies). But this flimsy, mirthless film does neither of those things, SAT: 2:45 5 12:35 9.35 00 SUM: SAT; M.T:445 7:20 9 4O SAT: 2:30 12:15 4457:20 Dtf: 440 7:25 930 SAT: CHARLY 12:30 2:30 4:40 725 9 30 tOt 9:40 SAT: 9 40 Diselegant and mature ney film about a repressed young girl who meets a family that is destined to live forever without aging. The teen romance will woo a certain audience, but that same demographic probably will not appreciate the film's unromantic ending. It's a good destination, and marked by fine acting throughout, but it needs some clarification. C THE TRANSPORTER (1 hr., 32 for a lot of martial-art- s min.; violence, some mild profanity, some very brief and very mild sexuality) An f about a exciting bit of resourceful James Bond Jackie Chan sort of fellow who transports things for you, no questions asked, and winds up running from pursuing bad guys. A frenetic, stylish pace, wry humor employed by the dryly charismatic Jason Statham in the title role, increasingly outrageous stunt pieces this is cool, slick 1 read yours today? 72 action violence, some gore) Jackie Chan and his talents are egregiously misused in this confused attempt at a superhero flick, screwball comedy and martial arts movie all in one. He plays a chauffeur who acquires super powers when he dons a scientifically engineered tuxedo, and then he has to save the world. Hindering him (and the movie) is his deadweight partner, Jennifer Love Hewitt, who demonstrates no skill for comedy. And even if she did, the comedy here is predictable, and lame. D WHITE OLEANDER (1 hr., 49 for a fair amount of min.; profanity, some sexual innuendo, some intense themes and a little violence) Morose, dour drama about a teenage girl bounced from one home to another after her mother is imprisoned for murder. The film supposes that merely watching someone triumph over adversity is the same thing as receiving renewed strength to triumph over adversity yourself; in truth, it's just depressing, because the highs the character reaches are never as strong as the lows. C SWEET HOME ALABAMA (1 hr., 42 min.; PG-1- 3 for scattered profanity, mild vulgarity, mild sexual innuendo) Cute, inconsequential film about a New York fashion designer who must return to her Alabama hometown to get a divorce before she can marry her politician boyfriend. "Signs" doesn't stand alone that is, without the "twist" as well as the other films did, but it has great performances from Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix and is highly successful at establishing dread and suspense. B THE SINGLES WARD (1 hr., 42 min.; PG for pretty much no reason) Friendly, though inept, comedy about an LDS man who gets divorced and is thrust back into a young single adults ward. Humor is generally stuff; if you're LDS and have a sense of humor, you've probably already made these jokes yourself. Likable performances from the leads (marred by from most of the bit players) and a general attitude help a little. C- - 0 THE RING 725 watching, sort of: You know exactly how it will end as scon as it begins, and you wish they'd quit wasting young tots might. D SIGNS (1 hr., 46 min.; PG-1- 3 for scattered profanity, a lot of suspense and scariness) Creepy, tense thriller about a farmer who discovers mysterious patterns in his cornfield, signaling things to come. But like M. Night Shyamalan's other films ("Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable"), "Signs" is really about to come along since the Greeks Did you DLY:4:50 instead catering to a sense of humor and alienating anyone with fond memories of the TV show.
