Orem Provo Spanish Fork Payson After a short illness, our humble and valiant Grandpa, Edmund LeRoy "Shady" Hansen, passed away on October 13, 2002, with family at his side. He was born April 29, 1916, in Benjamin, Utah, to Edmund and Bernice Hansen. He spent his youth in the towns of Mammoth, Eureka, and Benjamin. As a young man, he enjoyed the sport of baseball. Because he could throw well with both hands, he found it cumbersome to wear a mitt, and endured catching balls with his bare hands. Following high school, he worked in the fruit orchards of California where he earned money to help support his family back home. He liked to tell us how he earned 30 cents an hour picking lemons and 50 cents an hour driving the sprayer truck pretty good wages for those times. He married his sweetheart, Norma Gwen Haskell, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they raised two sons and a daughter. He started his career at Geneva Steel, where he worked in the blast furnace department. At the time of his retirement 30 years later, he was a foreman there. After his retirement, he and Grandma moved to Ivins, Utah, where they set to work creating their own little Garden of Eden. With blood, sweat, and tears, they transformed the sagebrush-covere- d red dirt into a landscaped paradise, complete with walking paths, fountains, waterfalls, and handmade stepping-stoneAll by themselves, they created swing sets, sandpiles, a wading pool, swimming pool, and miniature golf course for their grandchildren to enjoy. One of Grandpa Shades favorite pastimes was golf, and he even received a trophy for a His favorite activity was "wetting a hook," and it was said that he could cateh fish where no one else could. Aside from fishing at Otter Creek and Boulder Mountain red-roc- k s. hole-in-on-e. with his children, the highlight of his fishing career came in the summer of 2000 in Alaska where he caught huge salmon and a halibut that almost rivaled his own weight. Although never one to seek the spotlight, Grandpa could usually be coaxed into playing a few tunes for us on his harmonica, which he had learned to play as a little boy. But everyone's favorite thing about Grandpa was his incredible sense of humor. Grandpa was a quiet man of few words, but you could be guaranteed that when words did come out, everyone listened, and the entire room would often erupt in laughter. Sometimes the words were colorful, often sarcastic, but they provided the spark that warmed the room. For the longest time, we grandchildren really believed that there had been bedbugs lined up along the footboard of Grandpa's boyhood bed "drawing straws to see who got the next suck!" We all got to see an amazingly tender side of Grandpa as he supported Grandma Norma through her battle with Alzheimers. He was at her side every single day till the end, even when she didn't have a clue who he was. This is patience. This is This is the pure love of Christ. Even though Grandpa had to endure two open-heasurgeries, we like to say that there wasn't a darn thing wrong with his. When they opened up his chest they found what we have known all along our Grandpa's heart was pure gold. Shady is survived by son David (Teresa) Hansen of Layton; son Raymond (Virginia) Hansen of St. George; daughter Charlotte (Martin) Dodge of Orem; siblings: Faye (Ralph) Bond; Peggy (Max) Braith-waitNed (Danna) Hansen; 15 grandchildren and 24 He was preceded in death by his wife Norma, his parents, and eight siblings.
