Make your parents a part of the family, don't force them outside. That was Dad's cue to take over the peeling operation, and a few days later his daughter was frantically asking her friends: "Would you take some peeled apples? I've got tubs of them and I must get rid of them before they spoil." By the time the apples were all gone, the daughter was causes strained feelings. As they grow older, many people bathe and wash their hands less frequently. This is due primarily to a distaste for being cold, a fear of falling, or the feeling that "they haven't done anything to get dirty." Too few parents realize that their children are grown people now, with business near prostration and her and social responsibilities of friends near saturation. Yet, their own. Still, younger' the father had succumbed to one of the most basic of all human drives the urge to be constructively busy. The wise children are those who recognize this drive and try to keep the visiting parent busy. This holds, too, for apathet- ic --parents who apparently want to do nothing at all. Chances are, they've never been given the opportunity for any constructive activity and feel outside the ' family circle. Including them in family projects may help to rout this apathy. Older people also frequently lose the sharp edge of sensitivity. For example, their taste may be less acute, so they season food outrageously or they are likely to require more heat than younger members of the family. Oometimes cleanliness, or an apparent lack of it, people must accept the fact tha most of the ground-givin- g will have to come from them, since opinions and habits of a lifetime cannot easily be changed. In the final analysis, there's no substitute for good, love and compassion and respect. Much can be gained from having an older person around your home. The children can learn the meaning of respect toward their elders; both you and the children can benefit from your parents' wisdom . Remember, if for no other reason than out of gratitude and respect, the parents of grown and married children merit sympathy, understanding, and affection now. Given this, they can't help but respond in kind and the result will be a better, happier, more fulfilling relationship for"all concerned.
