Don MoLeod, director of the state Sheriff's Bureau, said George (Georgia Boy) Altman, 25, signed a statement saying he saw the Negro farm hand, Jesse Woods, alive after he was flogged in a secluded spot last Sunday. Woods, 39, was overpowered and kidnaped from the town's small, unguarded jail where he was held for safekeeping at his own request following release on bond on a drunk and disorderly charge. Woods allegedly insulted a white school teacher in front of a super market Saturday by accosting her with the words, "Hello, baby."
