For many, the meaning of Christmas lies in the spirit of giving, and nothing melts a parent's heart on a cold winter morning like the smile of a happy child. This year, hundreds of Hill AFB volunteers will provide families in the local community with an opportunity to wake up to smiles on Christmas morning. is staffed by Hill AFB emcollect who food, warm clothing, money, ployees toys which they clean and repair and then divide among nearly 200 local families who are having a hard time at Christmas. Volunteers spend hours mending and repairing donated toys at the toy shop located on base. Toy shop director, SSgt. Rocky Hughes, makes sure the toys look their best before they find a home. Donated toys aren't sent out unless all the pieces are present and functioning. "A toy isn't a toy without all the weebles," Hughes said, "so we often save our toys for the next year until we either receive or locate missing parts." Money is raised throughout the year at fundraisers such as bake sales, candy sales, a spring a softball tournament and a craft fair. Local merchants also donate toys and money. The money is prorated according to family size and then is given t'v the family members in the Sub-for-San- ta walk-a-tho- n, form of vouchers to be used at local grocery and retail stores. publicity director, Rick Fuit, works with volunteers to raise money. "There are literally hundreds of unsung heroes who dedicate so much of their time and efforts to raising money for this program,"1 he said. would never work without the support from the base and the community," Fuit said. Fuit said that no child should have to go without at Christmastime. "Kids know when Christmas is coming they watch the television and listen to the radio," Fuit said. "I feel better knowing that a community effort such as can provide Christmas for these children and their families." Toys are accepted at the toy shop, Bldg. 1532, weekdays throughout the year.
