Banquet fetes Outstanding Airmen of the Year by Lisa Colgate " 11 Hilltop Times staff writer TTTT 0 A The Ogden Air Logistics Center nominees for the Air Force Association's 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year were selected Dec. 13. First sergeant of the year for the ALC was also selected. MSgt. Grace J. Bynum, TSgt. Francis E. Walters and SrA. Jimmy D. Thompson Jr. will now advance to Air Force Logistics Command-leve- l competion, the most prestigious enlisted recognition program in the Air Force. MSgt. Pamela J. Copp was selected as first sergeant of the Year. She will now compete at AFLC level. The 12 Outstanding Airmen award program was established in 1956 and is designed to allow each major command to select airmen who significantly contribute to the success of their units. Having survived the scrutiny of their peers, supervisors and unit and center selection boards, this year's nominees were selected because of thiir hard work and superior achievements. The airmen are evaluated on leadership and job performance in their primary duty as well as social, cultural or religious activities. Nominees are also evaluated according to efforts and accomplishments which distinguish them from their peers. nt MSgt Grace J. Bynum Bynum is a personnel technician assigned to the Human Resources Directorate. She is known for running her sections in an efficient and professional manner and handled very sensitive issues regarding operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, her nomination package states. Bynum is involved in a multitude of church, base and local activities. Bynum said she is honored to have been selected. "This award shows me that my appreciate what I do. ' f " J II' - Airman Thompson Sergeant Walters insaid that Bynum is an intelligent, of dividual capable working under pressure. "She is a strong example for others to learn from," Glenn said. Walters, Technology and Industrial Support Directorate, was nominated for his excellent performance, outstanding professional skill, knowledge and leadership as an air transportation specialist, his nomination package stated. Walters said he is proud to be one of three airmen honored from Ogden ALC. "Walters is a valuable member of the Hill team," said Lt. Col. John M. Jewett, Walter's supervisor. "His unique abilities as a problem solver and committed team member make him a dynamic representative of the best in the Air Force." SrA. Jimmy D. Thompson Jr. Thompson is a telephonedata installation repair specialist in the 1881st Communications-Compute- r Systems Group. Early in his career, Thompson assumed critical responsibility when he was called to repair the Hill 911 emergency reporting system. In this situation he displayed outstanding supervisory and technical ability. "Without his swift response Sergeant Copp and telecommunications knowledge, emergency reports would have been delayed," his nomination package noted. Thompson's supervisor, SSgt. Mark T. Tachney, said he admires Thompson's dedication and constant striving for excellence. "Thompson has been an example for all to follow," Tachney said. "His personal status makes him a cut above the rest." MSgt. Pamela J. Copp Copp was awarded the First Sergeant of the Year award, an award acknowledging dedication and notable job performance. She is assigned to the U.S. Air Force Hospital, Hill. According to Copp continues to blaze a trail of excellence that is unsurpassed by any other first sergeant at Hill. She has initiated support groups for spouses of deployed personnel, acquired furniture and appliances for the dorms, written regulations, organized fund raisers and taken the time to support those who ask for help, her nomination package stated. Capt. Rex A. Langston, who works with Copp at the hospital, said, "Sergeant Copp is truly committed in every aspect of her job.
