B The financial stress of the holiday season can cause feelings of frustration and increase stress. For some, alcohol consumption increases during the holidays. Know that it is a depressant and consciously switch to soft drinks so that alcohol does not become a contributor to holiday depression. B Family relationships are sometimes causes of stress during the holidays. In cases of divorce or being separated from one's family, the holidays tend to focus on togetherness. This, in itself, can add to M(oiy Lni(Q y&iwDS(p feelings of loneliness and depression. One point to remember is that stress is not all bad. In moderation, it can cause us to become more efficient. However, too much stress can lead to social isolation and withdrawal, as well as behaviors such as drinking, drug use and gambling. Everyone experiences some of these symptoms to a certain degree as part of living. The key in identifying signs of excess stress is to pay attention to changes in our normal level of functioning. It is unrealistic to expect to entirely eliminate stress from our lives, but it should be kept at a manageable level. There are several ways to manage by Capt. Much of this distress can be avoided if people are aware of the factors causing these feelings. Stress is the No. 1 contributor to the loneliness and depression suffered by many. By identifying the causes of stress, the impact can be lessened. n Bleak weather conditions, shorter days and infrequent sunshine can all contribute to a sense of sadness and a feeling of being overwhelmed. Fatigue brought on by the extra time and ef self-destructi- day-to-da- ve y stress. B First and foremost is to increase social support, whether it is through friends, family, clergy, counselors, co-- orkers or support groups. Healthy relationships and positive interactions are important buffers against stress and its effects. B Take time to relax and do the things you enjoy w doing. Many people cut out personal, pleasurable activities w hen they get busy with other obligations. Taking time out for oneself allows you to recharge your batteries and face your responsibilities. B Exercise, diet and sleep are all valuable in managing stress. Staying healthy and strong helps us be less vulnerable to the harmful effects of stress. B Keeping your sense of humor is a tremendous buffer against anxiety, stress and depression. Deapproach toward life and its veloping a problems can lessen the impact of stress.
