This rollover demonstrator was parked outside the base theater COMMENTARY Hilltop Times staff writer The days between Memorial Day and Labor Day have been designated the "101 Critical Days of Summer" because motorists have more accidents during this time than at any other season of the year. The major causes of this high rate of accidents are: Q Drinking and driving. With the stiff penalties for DUIs these days and the drastically increased risk of dents, common sense dictates that you just shouldn't do it. B Driving while fatigued. People try to go too far on short weekends and end up driving when they are tired, acci- sleepy and rushed. B Failure to wear seat belts. Seat belts statistically lessen injury and prevent deaths. It only takes three seconds to buckle up. The following quote from Maj. Gen. Walter Worthington, commander, 12th Air Force, bears repeating. "Summer is a time for travel and recreation; however, too often these activities result in tragedies that we regret the remainder of our lives. Don't kid yourselves into believing the tragedies only happen to the other person! Without constant awareness of risks and appropriate precautions, we can last G week during presentations of the base's annual M101 ft Days of Summer" safety program. U S Air iu so you are not rushed. When driving, take enough breaks to keep from coming mentally and physically tigued." So, for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, work hard and play hard but do so safely. You've got to care. fore Photo by Ralph all become victims. As summer sets in and the temperature soars, we too keep the heat turned up on acci- prevention. I challenge each of you to use seat belts and other res- traint devices. Don't mix alcohol and driving or boating.
