Show 20 Hilltop Times LIFETIMES May 17, 1991 Motorcycle safety: it's everyone's job by Roger L. Robertson Ogden ALC Safety Otf.ce One of the sure signs of spring is the number of motorcycles on the road. Although a motorcyclist is responsible lor his or her own safety, the ac- tions of other drivers significantly increi.se the mortocyclist's chance of being involved in an accident. In the majority of accidents involving motorcycles, errors on the part of vehicle operators caused the accident. But the motorcyclist paid the price. What can you do to reduce the chances of a collision with a motorcyclist? The following defensive driving tips can be helpful. B Always give them plenty of room. This means not only following distance, but also watching out for motorcycles that may be in the next lane. If a motorcyclist is tailgating you, switch lanes or slow down enough so that he or she can pass safely. Be especially cautious when passing a motorcycle. Don't cut back too soon. Ensure that the rider has the proper following distance when you return to your lane. The vacuum that your vehicle leaves in the air can cause control problems for the cyclist. El Don't depend entirely on mirrors for visibility. Turn around to check your blind spots. The size of a motorcycle, compared to a car, makes it four-whe- el ards. Be prepared to adjust to these frequent lane changes. Look out for the inexperienced cyclist. A good sign to look for is the lack of proper protective equipment, and inappropriate dark clothing. An inexperienced driver is more likely to do harder to see. something dangerous. Be especially aware of cyclists who take any kind of abnormal risks. Although their numbers are small, their deliberate unsafe action mav Be aware of other hazards that present a threat to motorcyclists. The rider may have to switch lanes frequently to avoid numerous road haz WAN' WE HAVE: A H result in serious injury or death. Most motorcycle accidents occur at intersections. In most of these accidents, the other driver turned left in front of the motorcyclist. Motorcycles are hard to see. Your view may be obstructed by other vehicles or by glare. It is also difficult to judge the speed of motorcycles. Before turning, pause to ensure better visibility. When in doubt, wait until the motorcycle has passed. For anyone wishing to register a motorcycle at Hill AFB, the Safety Office conducts a mandatory training course prior to permanent registration. Temporary registrations can be obtained to allow for completion of this course. This class is sanctioned and taught by certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructors.
