The workers heard of the layoffs Thursday and Friday. The job cuts came quickly after foundation trustees emphasized Wednesday to foundation president John Bennion the importance of liquidating a $1.6 million operating deficit that threatens to undermine the long-terfunding power of a $76 million endowment left behind by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. On Thursday, Bennion told managers of the two facilities under foundation directly cc(nrroi Utah Olympic Oyal in Kearns and the Utah Olympic Park complex of ski positions. He then went to both venues Friday to explain the situation to staff members. "It has not been a couple of fun days," said Bennion, who declined to disclose names or positions cut, other than to stress that all decisions were dictated by budgetary needs rather than employee performance. The foundation, which is changing its name to Olympic e Parks of Utah, had 55 or seasonal and 150 part-tim- e employees. m No. 1201 Crossword Edited by Will Shortz 1234 ACROSS 53 Grand (island east of Florida) 1 Slacken 6 Disparaging remark 56 Film sensation of 1933 10 Dog (G.I. iden60 Wished undone tifiers) 61 Remained in bed 14 Speeder s bane 17 Actress Verdugo 18 Shortly Railroad 65 Watch at a strip club, maybe 66 Confuse 2b 'ti 22 24 25 26 29 often Chamber group, maybe Make the first moves, in dancing Former Italian money Dogie catchers Game with an onomatopoeic name 69 Red I 7 Mji s jacket size 8 Martian s craft, for s 13 44 Stagnant 46 Sitcom alien 21 52 marker 29 Fork tine 31 base as a IV 35 Making a hole in one 38 Moved to first class 40 Bathtub feature ture Desert stops 43 Dutch 45 Any 27 Latin eyes cheese three-lette- sequence l)iviJlbl,uMlg. u:rr:;!N(; company : as to a plant aper- Piggy-ban- k 25 Stocking material 26 Angry, with "up" bell I n Sfib H6 i9 i I 48 Where to find a bump, Tinseltown Chivalrous 32 Add on, in a phrase r r:t r. r " - 54 Mystique 55 Estate receiver " 56 "A View to a (Bond film) 57 Chances Turn to 58 Cairo s waterway 59 Travels page 62 A cog s r I ; - t ;M 1 r . 1 1 for thg (long answers. spell) n (p. Allegations that Saddam maintained chemical and other weapons of mass destruction in violation of U.N. orders was cited by the United States as the main reason for launching the Iraq war. No such weapons have yet been found. Meanwhile, a U.S. military spokesman said that two Iraqi policemen were shot Friday after paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade responded to a report of "family fighting" in Kirkuk, about 150 miles north of Baghdad. Paratroopers spotted two men firing into a house, said Maj. Josslyn Aberle, a spokeswoman for the 4th Infantry Division. The men, who were wearing long coats, fled as the troops approached and were joined by a third man, she said. "The soldiers verbally warned the three to stop and then fired warning shots," Aberle said. "The men refused to comply and the soldiers took a defensive position and fired," killing two of them and detaining the third. feAGHDAD, Iraq British soldiers and Iraqi g police clashed Saturday with armed, in southeastern Iraq, protesters killing six people. U.S. officials acknowledged American soldiers mistakenly killed two Iraqi policemen after they failed to identify themselves to a patrol. In Baghdad, a senior U.S. military officer confirmed that preliminary reports showed that a U.S. Army medevac helicopter that crashed last week near Fallujah, killing all nine so)diers aboard, was shot down. Also Saturday, Danish and Icelandic troops found a cache of 36 shells in southern Iraq, and preliminary tests showed they contained a liquid chemical weapon, the Danish military said. But U.S. Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said the leaking shells, found near Al Quarnah, north of the city of Basra, are believed to date from the Iran-Ira- q war, which ended in 1988. A statement from the Danish army said British experts did a preliminary test and said the shells contained "blister gas," but did not elaborate.
