In addition to these surprises, Machen is expected to address concerns with the Florida State Legislature regarding funding, setting tuition and budgets. Machen made no comment on the homicide victim, who was discovered in his student housing apartment by police the afternoon of Jan. 4. According to University of Florida police spokesman Lt Joe Sharkey, the victim's name, cause of death or a list of suspects has not been released. Students will have to order books from the online catalogue and wait 24 hours for them to be delivered to a different library, said Barbara Hood, director of public information for the library. Machen has said the decision was made before he arrived, but he would find out all he could. According to University of Florida Provost David many troubles between the university and the Florida Legislature are because of tuition policies. The university has the lowest tuition in the country because it is largely paid for by the state. The state refuses to raise tuition because it would increase cost to the state. As a result the university receives less than a third of the revenue from tuition as does other schools of similar size, Colburn said. Machen was reported as saying that he has never seen a university acting as such an agent of the state, referring to the tight reign the Legislature holds over budgets. Among these challenges, it was also reported that he walked to work his first day because of the unseasonably warm weather there. Andrew Kirk Asst. News Editor If a tree falls on campus and there is no one around to hear it, does the grounds department still have to pick it up? With the recent snowfall, hundreds of trees around campus were seriously damaged, forcing the grounds department to spend extra time cleaning them up, said Ann Williams, grounds crew leader. Normally, trees are only damaged during early or late snowfalls. In October or March, the trees have leaves on them that hold the heavy snow and break branches, Williams said. But this year, a cold rain preceded the wet and heavy snow, making it sticky. Trees dont usually have a problem this time of year, but the snow has been stacking up on the branches. Ash and purple plum trees have been the hardest hit, she said. Ash trees located on the older parts of campus, such as President's Circle, and around the Union are often damaged in heavy storms. "The plums really surprised me," Williams said. "I don't know why they're tip ping over I was floored" Damaged purple plum trees are located north of Orson Spencer Hall and near the Park Building. Altogether, about 12 trees are so badly damaged they will have to be pulled out Most trees on campus will recover. "Trees are able to compartmentalize wounds and keep decay in one spot," Williams said. In the meantime, grounds crew workers have been clearing walkways of branches. The storm has also higheflighted the fects of current budget pains at the U. The grounds department budget like many departments across campus, has taken a heavy hit Employing six workers to do nothing but pick up branches for two days was expensive, Wilng anticipate pruning damaged trees into spring, she said "Just be petient as we clean up," Williams said. akirkchronicle.utah.edu If you need advice ask Jen.
