Show THURSDAY, MARCH THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 7 22, 2001 Unfounded Attack Editor: I am writing in response to an article I found quite disturbing. It was in the March 5 edition concerning Mike Nelson, candidate for the No Bull party. What I found disturbing was the weight given to an unfounded and unproven accusation. A student so graciously took upon himself the noble task of warning us about the character of a candidate without knowing anything of his character. It is unfortunate that someone was inconsiderate enough to try to damage the character of a person he knew nothing about, but had only overheard. I have been acquainted with Mike for 10 years. Never would I ever believe that he held any unkind feelings toward any group of peovice-president- If S I Mon-Fr- Sat MARCH prove it. , , 208 S. 1300 E. Ten years from now Mike may not care who won this race, but he will care how people viewed him. So before you decide to attack someone's character, know the person first. These" two topics are, believe it or not related. Another crucial LDS belief is the belief that our spirits have sexuality. Just as there are men. out there whq would like to experience the maternal bond that comes from nine months of sharing the same body with your child and the bonding that can take place in breastfeeding, there are women who would like to experience having the priesthood. But neither can happen. It is not discriminatory. I realize there are many feminists out there reading this, cringing. Believe it or not, I am a feminist who does not mind not having the priesthood. Homophobia is rampant among church members, especially in Utah. If we go back to the tenets of being Christian and following Christ's example, homophobic acts and crimination are clearly contrary to Christianity. The action of homosexuality is a serious sin, just as any sexual relationship outside of marriage between man and woman is wrong in the eyes of God. But having inclinations toward same-se- x attraction is something that, clearly, one does not choose for oneself. All I know is that we are born to make choices and learn from the consequences of those choices. Everyone has his or her own set of challenges, some worse than others. I just think that a lot of LDS people get really stuck on the sin aspect of homosexuality and forget all about being Christ-likBeing cruel is sinful too, do not forget. No one is without fault. To those LDS homophobes out there: Stop trying to pluck the mote out of your brother's eye when there's obviously a huge gnarly beam in yours. I realize that a lot of what I am saying may "hit some people as a regurgitation of religious dogmas brainwashed into my very being. You are entitled to your own opinion; I just wanted to voice mine.
