Show 6 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27. THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 2000 Inappropriate Satire Is Not Effective let's have the name. Please, let's have some issues to talk about instead of hiding behind satire. Sawyer is exhibiting the same prototypical stance by critics of the LDS church: she is anxious to sling mud, have no right to defend it as exactly is ethnicity, then, if not something we are without choosing? According to her logic, why would we not have the right to defend religion as ethnicity? However, I have chosen and my choice being different gives you no right to insult it. She is correct in stating that criticism of a religion is not oppressive to its followers; "candid discussion" and "fair and open discourse on religious issues" are beneficial. And these things are exactly what her satire, by her own admittance, was not. If she is really interested in "fair and open discourse," then by all means, write something that is fair and open. She mentions that the reaction to her letter would have Editor ethnici-ty...wh- Sure, satire is a great way to identify stereotypes, right or wrong. But, in response to Rachel Sawyer's letter to the editor, don't you get defensive when people react strongly to unfair stereotypes ("Lost lair of Covey," as if we worship him; "the Very Tithing Dollar That Bought the Legislature." suggesting political corruption) or when we won't sit idly by and let you bad mouth our religion (Monday, Oct. 23 letter). She insinuates plenty of silly stuff going on in The Church of Jesus Saints. Beyond Christ of Latter-da- y that, though, what is her point? rebuttal, "A Message Sawyer's Behind the Smiles," is also full of holes. She states we have no more choice in our religion than "Caucasians in being born white or homosexuals gay." Yet she claims we at and use the lifestyles of modern African American history. I would be interested in hearing from such figures as Louis or Jesse Jackson. I feel the black person's social construct is highly influenced at this stage of our collective journey by the support or lack thereof that is given to their endeavors by the think that this community still a long way to go in its relationships with those of differing religious, ethnic and social classifications. I think that this topic of accepI Far-raka- tance of other people regardless of race, gender, political affiliation, etc. ...goes to the heart of the dominant religious background of most majority white population. I encourage everyone who wishes to feel closer to the black population Utahns. Isn't that what she wanted in the first place? been different had she attached the name of a church authority: well, Editor: I read the house editorial Oct. 23 about the diversity issue on campus and I agree that to many students, those native to Utah perhaps more than those from other states or countries, the diversity requirement for graduation is viewed as something of an obstacle rather than an opportunity. It was good satire, her letter. Had she satirized the clone Jesus project instead of turning it into a subtle rant against the LDS Church, it may have been more effective.
