Show DAILY HE T CHRONICLE UTAH Footb Gets Win At S an Diego State The consequences of Saturday's game at San Diego State were quite apparent for coach Ron McBride and his Utah football team: Win, and they would be back in the race for the MWC title; Lose, and they could basically kiss the conference goodbye. Fortunately for the Utes, they made like John Travolta and will be stayin' alive for at least another week. Fueled by a quick start and two bombs to Steve Smith, first-quart- who was back from a er sus- one-gam- e pension, Utah prevailed in a 7 slugfest that gave the team its first conference victory of the season. The Utes are now 4 overall and in MWC competition. While Utah technically would not have been mathematically eliminated from the conference title race had it lost to the Aztecs, dropping to 2 on the season in the MWC and having lost to a team expected to finish at or near the bottom of the league would have been disastrous. Consequently, the Utes never put themselves in a position to allow such a scenario to unfold. They scored on their very first drive from their when, on third-and-- 4 own line, quarterback Dar- 21-- 2-- 1- -1 0-- 26-ya- -- nell Arceneaux hooked up with Smith on a pass for a touch74-ya- down. On its very next possession, Utah scored yet again, with what would prove to be the touchdown. The drive started with ri nning back Adam Tate netting a rush, continued with tight end Matt Nickel hauling in a pass from Arceneaux, and, two plays later, ended with receiver Cliff Russell hooking up with Arcetouchdown neaux for a reception and a 0 lead. In just seven plays, the Utes had gone 141 yards, scored two touchdowns and effectively relegated the anemic Aztecs to their fifth loss of the season. SDSU, which came into the contest as one of the worst offensive teams in the nation, lived tsp to its billing punting on its first six pos- sessions and on eight of its nine first-ha- lf drives. On the one drive that the Aztecs didn't punt, they turned the ball over on downs when quarterback Lon Sheriff was sacked by Utah's Garrett Smith on game-winni- 28-ya- rd 16-ya- rd 14-- fourth-and-- o.
