Aristotle studied the phenomenon of bird babies killing one another. Then for 2,300 years, not much happened on the subject. But for Professor Doug Mock, studying why some baby birds kill their nestmates, also referred to as, "siblicide," has been a long-tim- e passion. Mock, from the University of Oklahoma, presented his research and B chicks intercept food before the smaller C chick can, the larger two acting like basketball players aggressive elbowing their way in for a rebound. TJie A and B chicks suppress their younger sibling further by pecking it incessantly, sometimes to death. "Think of it like a game of musical chairs with three players, two their brood. Mock explained how a mother eagle can lay only one egg per day, producing a brood of typically three. The first born, or "A" chick, has a head start, developing before the two younger, or B and C, chicks can. "I am just thrilled of College Abra-van- el tral, symphonic and balletic music and he conducted the whole repertoire," Greenan said. Born in Salonika, Greece, Abravanel studied medicine in Switzerland, where he was in charge of the stage music for the Municipal Theatre Company. He dropped medicine and became a conductor in Europe and Australia. He conducted the New York City Metropolitan Opera before leading the Utah Symphony for 32 years. He died in 1993 at the age of 90. Carolyn Abravanel said the two had discussed exactly what to do with his musical collection after he died. "I feel like it's a mission accomplished after four and a half years in the making." she said. "I know Maurice would be pleased to know that we were able to work out an agreement where his scores are protected yet accessible." that the students will have this incredible gift that will expand their potential in terms of how they see themselves." With the studio now can see "how a musician of the first rank dealt with the score," Greenan said. She said music classes can also use the room for study sessions, but if any student wants to look at the scores or the books, they must wear protective gloves provided by the library. Greenan visited the actual studio in Abravanel's home before it was transplanted to the U. "There was almost a tangible presence in that room, and I think it will take up residence here too," she said. The collection, which is still being appraised, almost doubles the number of scores in the Gardner Hall collects tion.
