UTAH Flags Bring Attention To Rape and Assault WYNNE PARRY Chronicle News Writer Red flags coat a section of lawn behind the A. Ray Olpin University Union Building, and to Kathy Brooks, director of the Women's Resource Center, they are a painful sight. "I'd like to do away with all the red flags," Brooks said. It is not the contrast between the intense red of the flags and the fading green of the lawn that bothers her, though it is the symbolism embodied by each of the 2,250 flags. Planted Friday, the red flag display was organized by Peers Education to End Rape, an organization advised by theWRC. Every red flag represents one rape or sexual assault reported to the Salt Lake City Rape Recovery Center since last January. Reports come from the entire population; women and girls, men and boys, according to Emily Newcomer, a WRC employee. Signs bearing statistics accompany the flag display which will remain up throughout the week. The center will place a new flag each time an assault is reported throughout the week, Newcomer said. "People often think that it is a scare tactic, but it is not; it helps," said Marty Liccardo, a member of PEER who has been involved with the display in previous years. The goals of the display are twofold: awareness and victim support "I can't say enough good things about what awareness can do," Liccardo said. He added that the display helps publicize support services available at the WRC, an important job because "often, survivors think they are alone." Throughout the week, WRC volun- teers will place ribbons bearing the reactions of community members on a tree directly in front of the red flags. The ribbons are a new addition to the annual red flag display that PEER has organized off and on since the mid-1990- year only calls on new incidents were counted, according to Brooks, Concrete statistics for sexual assault are difficult to find, according to Liz Rago, WRC programs director. Some studies show that one in six female students will be assaulted before getting her degree. Other studies say that throughout the course of a man's life, he has a one in six to a one in 10 chance of being assaulted. Statistics are often difficult to obtain because reported assaults represent only a fraction of actual incidents. But according to Brooks, this is less of a problem at the U. "We are better here at the U as far as reporting," Brooks said. She praised the university for being supportive and encouraging victims to report assaults. Volunteers hoped to further nurture this supportive attitude through the display. Aaron Watts, a student volunteer, participated in setting up the flags because he knows victims of sexual even!! "The first year we ordered 5,000 flags and put up nearly all of them," Brooks said. However, she cautions that a decrease in the number of flags may not represent an equal drop in the number of assaults. Numbers obtained from the Rape Recovery Center have changed because the center recently began counting calls differently.
