2000 TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 11 U Falls in Rankings Again "It's satisfying because they are ranked, and you (the media) make a big deal out of beating ranked teams" said UNLV coach Bill Bayno after his team's win over Utah on Saturday, The Utes are the only MWC team - ranked in the AP poll and the ESPN coaches' poll, but the loss over the d weekend made them a team than they were a week ago. Hardly a week has gone by this season without some change in Utah's ranking. Rick Majerus team began the season ranked 15th in both polls, then endured an early season slide that bounced it from the AP and landed the Utes at No. 25 in the coaches' poll. Utah has been as high as 18th in the AP and 19th in the coaches' poll since, but hasn't cracked the top-1- 0 for the first time in three years. Hie Utes spent the last two weeks at No. 19 in both polls the first time all season their status hasn't changed in the AP. But after losing to UNLV, the Utes took another small step backward. Utah is now 20th in the AP, and the nation's college coaches consider the Utes to be the team in the country. Perhaps more important than either poll, in terms of NCAA Tournament seeding, is the Utes' RPI ranking. A team's RPI is determined largely record and strength of by won-Ioschedule, and Utah ranks 32nd overall.
