That is not fodder for smart-mouthe- sports columnists to joke about.That is the dark side of real life. The tragedy of Galarraga's situation is not that as a Braves fan I will miss his .310 average, 45 homers and 140 RBI this season. The tragedy is that a good person will have to suffer through the experience of dealing with a disease that is and often fatal. Kim Perrot, a guard for the WNBA's Houston Comets is experiencing a similar situation. It was discovered just days ago that Perrot has lung cancer. That cancer has spread to her brain. Like Galarraga, she will have surgery, she will undergo radiation therapy and she will undergo chemo. I do not care about the WNBA or the Houston Comets. And I have never met Kim Perrot. But I feel compassion for her and have empathy for her. Situations such as hers put things in perspective. When I hear that Galarraga and Perrot have cancer, when I hear that Lakers' forward Robert Horry was hospitalized because of an irregular heartbeat, I no longer feel so bad for guys like David instead of the New York Yankees, then by relative standards you are pretty lucky. Wells will be upset about having to leave the only team he ever wanted to play for, but he will realize that spending his days in SkyDome is preferable to spending his days in a hospital bed. In the meantime, if humor really does have healing powers, then Galarraga, KNOW OF SOMETHING INTERESTING HAPPENING ON CAMPUS OR IN THE riTY?
