Show 14 -- The Daily Wednesday, February 24, 1999 Utah Chronicle No. 12 Utes Have Chance for History The Red Rocks tied their best team floor on Friday (49.300), and again broke the mark on Monday, with a new team high of 49.350 on GYMNASTICS continued from page 12 Brandon Winn Chronicle Sports Editor - Duke 27-- 1 2- - Auburn 25-- 3- - Michigan St. Connecticut 1- Don't look now, but the University of Utah and DuUe University have something in common. Both have a chance to make history this weekend. Not in any classroom, but on the hardwood. If Duke beats North Carolina on Saturday, the Blue Devils will become the first team in ACC history 4- 5- - 6- - to win 16 games. Utah has a similar task ahead of it. If the Utes can defend their home court against UTEP and New Mexico, they will become the first WAC team to go through conference play and pick up 16 wins. But even with all that. Rick Majerus still insists that his team "is not that good." He does, however, admit that it is continuing to get better. At this pace, the Utes could be downright decent by the end of the NCAA Tournament, if you follow Majerus' logic, that is. The truth is newsflash, everyone the Utes are pretty dang good, despite what their coach says. They are 0 in the WAC, 22-- 4 overall and ranked No. 12 by both the Associated Press and Coaches' polls. This means that Utah is right in line to equal the No. 3 seed it picked up for the NCAA Tournament a year ago, though two games this week and the WAC Tournament still remain to be played. If the national polls are any indication, the Utes are peaking at the perfect time of the year tournament time. Utah was in a similar spot last year, but lost to UNI.V in the WAC Tournament.
