Show Wednesday, January 20, 1999 THe Daily WALDEN continued from page Ml in 13 Reporter: "Mike, you seem to bring a lot of rage into the ring. Did that hurt you against Holyfield?" Tyson: "Wel- l,- it. It's a fight, so whatever happens, happens." Reporter: "Mike, why do you have to use language like that?" Tyson: "I'm talking to you the way I want to talk to you." Reporter: "Let's just stop right here. Have a nice fight, Mike. " Tyson: "Foff." When it comes to Tyson, I almost don't know whether to laugh or cry. I can't quite figure out if he's ignorantly oblivious to the world around him or merely a product of his environment. We're talking about a guy who only got enough to eat as a youth when he beat up elderly women and stole their groceries as they left the neighborhood market. We're talking about a guy whose livelihood was dependent upon Don King a guy who once killed another man in a street fight over money. We're talking about a guy whose was an only father-figur- e boxing trainer named Cus D'Amato. We're also talking about a guy who spent three years in an Indiana peni- tentiary for raping a teenage beauty contestant. A guy who bit off a chunk of Holy-field- 's ear and spit it out on the mat when he realized that he couldn't win. For as long as he has been in boxing, Tyson has been surrounded by parasites; his entourage has always consisted of men who have- - encouraged Tyson to do whatever he wants. That's why it's unfortunate that his career will continue. Reporter: "Mike, 7D T 11 J EASE VOl E Polls wil open January 19 at 7: 00 am was Botha talking and close trash?" Tyson: "Oh yeah. He talked more than I did." Reporter: "What was he saying?" Tyson: "Bad stuff. Stuff I don't want to repeat." Reporter: "Were you talking back?" Tyson: "Yeah." He often tells acquaintances that he is "going to kill Holy-fieldHe goes into the ring looking to end every fight with the first punch. And so as long as he is involved with boxing, he is a time bomb waiting to explode. Because he will continue to believe in the jaded notion that he is invinci- ." ble. And that is outright sad, because it is so utterly apparent that Tyson isn't capable of looking out for himself. Boxing is the only constant that Tyson has ever had in his life, yet he continues to do things that come perilously close to ending his association with the sport. That makes me wish that Tyson had lost to Francois Botha. Because if he was through with boxing, he could finally abandon his carefully cultivated image as a badass and move onto new things-Li- ke trying to be a human being. or by phone: g, I -- |
