Show 14 The Daily Utah -- Chronicle Wednesday, January 20, 1999 B EC KM AN continued from page 12 There are at least n other teams that wish they had her now, and the recruiting field was crowded from the get go. Almost all the schools in the WAC made a play for Beckman, but the decision came easier for her than it could have been. Elko coach Lynette Davis is the same aggressive style coach that Utah has in Elliott, and the rest of the Ute program impressed Beckman just as much. "I really liked the program," she said. "The coaches are great, Joe (Legerski) is just great, and Elaine is so much like my high school coach. I loved her attitude." And, although her family has since moved to Indiana, it didn't hurt that Salt Lake wasn't that far from their home in Elko. So here she is in Utah, and the compliments are flowing. "She's 6 foot 2, but she plays like she's 7 foot 2," said teammate Kristina Andersen. "She has the biggest heart of anybody on the team." Utah sports information director Liz Abel once said, "Lauren could be the best post player ever at Utah, and she could be it by January." Well, maybe not January. "Liz likes to talk," says Elliott, "but Lauren Beckman certainly has the ability to be the best by the time she's finished here." Elliott is also quick to add, "she has a lot to learn. She's inconsistent, one game she'll be really active, the next she won't move." The last statement is the one with which you are most likely to get Beckman to agree. "I just wanted to get some minutes," says Lauren of her expectations. "I'm just trying to find my complete game." Right now her incomplete game means leading the WAC with 1.9 blocked shots per game and being No. 10 on the WAC rebounding list. Not to mention 10.8 points per game, all coming off the bench for the Utcs. In her first game, Beckman had a double-doubl- e with 10 points and 13 rebounds. But stats aren't the only way Beckman is helping her team. Her spark has motivated the Ute's other post players. "Kristi Rose is playing her best basketball," says Elliott. "Having someone to share the post with has been really beneficial." "All the freshman challenged us to pick up our game a lot," said Andersen. "Beck is a great competitor, and she brings it to practice and every game." Given the numbers, it's no wonder some people don't see the holes in Beckman's game that she and Elliott see. During recent game, two Utah fans sat in the stands and debated who would win in a fight, Beckman or Wolverine, of fame. Wolverine ended up on top, but only because he has steel claws in his hands. Of course. Wolverine wasn't an Academic and National Honor Society member in high school. He doesn't want to be a doctor either. Ask Beckman about the possibility of playing professional o 360060 oO Q . &J ' t: an basketball some day and she'll say she doesn't think about it much. It might be a distraction. "If I had that opportunity, I would definitely think twice about it," she said, "but I want to go to medical school and that would be a break in time, just elongate the process." Too bad for the WNBA. Ask her teammates, her coaches, or anybody, really, about Beckman and one thing is for sure. No one will be surprised by anything she does next. "Lauren is a great kid," says Elliott. "She's one of those kids you're going to claim for a long time because she's going to do some great things after she's through here." Despite coming off the bench, Lauren Beckman has been a shot-blockin- g and scoring force for Utah. Display advertising.
