A few hours after UTEP upset Hawaii for the rights to play Utah, Benson announced the Miners would forfeit the game due to having played an ineligible player during conference games. Discrepancies were found by the NCAA in the transfer credits of Miner senior forward Kevin Beal, who transferred from Long Beach State after the 1994 basketball season, meaning Beal has been ineligible for two seasons.
