Editor way misrepresent med students would of the same image can influence one to that the That have editorials In reading defended violence on television, my first thought was that these people must not have children nor have they spent very much time with them. I consider myself a responsible and conscientious parent, yet my three doesn't understand my year-ol- d assurance that the "cops" aren't going to arrest her or that monsters on cartoons aren't real. That is completely understandable since experts say that children don't acquire the ability to reason until they are between six and 12 (See "Child Development, an Introduction," Biehler, 1976). How then, can we to understand year-olexpect our are only that Beavis and cartoons? Go into any daycare center and see how many children are mimicking the Ninjas or other cartoon characters. We are not blaming Hollywood, we are asking it to influence more positive aspects of society rather than negative. Granted, children should not be permitted to watch MTV or R rated movies. ABC, NBC and FOX show similar themes on prime time and we have a right to complain. To say that "television cannot cause violence" is ignorant (see daycare example). The truth is that "an image on the television screen" can "force or 'influence' 3-- 5 d Butt-hea- d want a certain item for Christmas, buy a cereal one may have never thought to try, or rush out to get an Arby's Ham and Swiss Melt Maybe, "most Americans can handle TV violence," but of the many people who do suffer from mental illness, TV may be responsible for "advertising" certain behaviors, just as we are influenced to go to Seven Peaks ("Gee, that looks like fun!"). People should be held responsible for their actions, but television's role of inspiring ideas should not be ignored. Too many fail to make a distinction between moral and legal issues. While Murphy Brown's pregnancy may or may not have been immoral, killing and raping and setting houses on fire is. Censorship is against our rights as Americans. But just as pornography or shows with excessive nudity are shown in special theaters, on videos, or .special cable channels, such should be the case for other types of shows. While TV violence may be a reflection of society's ills, it also sets the norms. Less analytical people may justify their behavior by thinking that everyone does it just because a few do, often without consequences, on TV. As a teen from a dysfunctional to at the Bunch Brady family, I Mr. Brady discipline his children then talk to them, making sure that they understood what they did wrong; how they loved their stepchildren as much as their own. Being able to see that my parents' behavior wasn't the only way to parent and that families can be loving and happy truly inspired me. In essence, they were positive role models. Parents joke about how kids don't come with instruction manuals. It is a huge myth that parenting is inherent, even in women. Editor .Writing accurate and attention-grabbin- on future physician incomes, he also discussed the other concerns we have. Being able to choose our own specialty, for ourselves. Identifying other contributing factors to the soaring costs of health care such as insur- g headlines is certainly fundamental to any journalistic endeavor. Unfortunately, it seems that accuracy is sometimes lost in the effort to make headlines attractive, especially in the Chronicle. A week or two ago, part of the headline to a story about health care ance companies and technology, and for eliminating as much of the red tape and paperwork from medicine as possible are equally important concerns medical students have. We are not doctors, and the fact is most of us have nothing resembling money in our wallets to worry about. Tuck was simply trying to clarify some of the concerns medical students, not doctors, have about some of the Clinton proposals for health care reform. Not only were your headlines inaccurate in both cases, the headline given Tuck's letter was also belittling to most doctors and medical students, whose professional motivations are centered around service, not avarice. To save you the trouble of finding reform proposals read "Medical Students Like Clinton Plan." This - certainly grabbed my attention since, as a medical student myself, I felt the majority of medical students would choose a verb other than "like" to characterize their views of most of the proposals in the Clinton Plan. Curiously enough, no medical students quoted in the article expressed an attitude of "liking" anything in the proposal. To help clear up any misunderstandings, our sophomore class president, Tuck Davis, wrote a letter in which he discussed several reservations which he and most medical students have about the Clinton Plan. The headline the Chronicle gave to his letter was "Doctors Worried About Wallets." Although Tuck did mention some concerns medical students have for potential restrictions not taking enough responsibility. But We all have to learn. No, we're these role models reach other people who may not have the time or resources to find alternative ideas for behaving, other that the way their parents did at home. What message are these people getting from Roseanne, Married...With Children, and the Simpson's! We must not ignore the subconscious. I'm not say- ing that these shows should be banned, rather that TV can be a progenitor, either negative or positive. Why is it wrong or too "reactionary" to suggest that television help rather than hinder? Television may not solve our problems, but it could stop glorifying them. Michelle McCarty Rose senior Spanish an inaccurate, attention-gettin- g headline for my letter, please use "Medical Thinks Student Chronicle's Headlines Are the Greatest."
