Show Friday, June 4, 1993 The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Seven Utah socialists have options Editor. 'Chronicle' publishes useless information Editor This letter is to inform you that there is an excess of useless information being printed in the Chronicle. e A prime example is the of the Grateful Dead photo essay full-pag- printed on May 26 and the photo of the man smoking an attempted fatty which has now, by the way, been printed twice. What exactly does this have to do with the University of Utah, or, for that matter, the Grateful Dead? The Grateful Dead is not about the parking lot scene, but rather the music the band provides. I have been to more than 40 shows in past years and have seen "the lot" 100 times. If there's going to be an essay on the Dead, why not include what they're about or even who they are (I didn't see a single picture of Jerry or the band in that essay). What I saw in the paper today was a wasted page in the Chronicle that could have been used for something useful, for example, the weather. When I go out of town, which is just about every weekend, I end up watching the weather channel and waiting for the area I'm going to to In Chronicle feature writer Bob Roberts' profile of the Socialist Workers PartyPathfinder Bookstore show up on the screen. Many of my friends here at the U. have the same problem. Why not put a weekend (June 1), he reports SWP spokesman weather report in the Chronicle to take up the space? This would save some wasted time for weekend travelers waiting for the report to come on the screen and it would help them to dress appropriately for whatever they are doing. By the way, the lightning bolt traditionally has 13 points. Jennifer MacAulay sophomore art education Mike Bodily as saying that the Socialist Workers Party "is the only option for students and working class individuals to get involved in politics." I doubt that Bodily would make such an obviously false statement about politics in general and I hope that he is not so sectarian as to claim that SWP is the only option for Utahns who want to get involved in socialist politics. Readers who are interested in socialist politics may want to check out a local organization called "Utah Socialists." Utah Socialists is a new type of organization, implementing some of the most recent thinking of creative socialists around the world. We are a pluralist organization with members of every socialist organization (except the SWP) working together for progressive social change. We respect the differing political views of our members who come Correspondence, Solidarity and the Industrial Workers of the World. In addition to the ideas of these groups, we make available publications representing other socialist organizations and movements including CrossRoads, Bulletin in Defense of Marxism, Socialist Action, Socialist Organizer, National Committee for Independent Political Action, Labor Notes and others. Interested people can contact our coordinator Scott Cowley at or me at Also, the current phase of SWP activity in Utah began in Logan, Ogden and Brigham City (not just USU) in the late 1960s, not late 70s as the Chronicle article indicated. I was involved at that time and in the founding of the SWP branch in Salt 262-329- 363-875- 1 8. Lake in 1976. There was an earlier phase of SWP activity in Utah beginning in the 1930s and almost fading away during the political repression of the 1950s. The organization did disband, but there was actually some individuals continuity lasting until the revival of SWP political activity in Utah in the late 1960s. from the Socialist Party, Communist Party, Democratic Socialists Committees America, of of Dayne Goodwin University Staff Cannon World Series? No. Not once. Can you name a Padre? Probably not, unless he's a relative. It's no coincidence from page five quence. Last year she was attacked by Dan Quayle for values. bad Typical behavpromoting ior for a Murphy. She is a key figure because her husband, Charlie, has such a profound impact on children. Incidentally, there are 14 Murphys here at the U. I verified this with the ASUU directory. None of them have been investigated. And who is this Jack Murphy, in whose stadium the San Diego Padres play? Have the Padres ever won the that the Padres are so consistently a bad team. As long as they stay in that stadium, whatever can continue to go wrong, will. Dale Murphy, probably the best known Murphy, retired from the Colorado Rockies a couple of weeks ago. The Rockies were doing worse than the Padres. Oh, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking I'm a paranoid who sees everything on earth as a plot against society.
