You can look it 1 Nietzsche One up. definition of evolution in Webster's New World Dictionary says it is a "process of development, as from a simple to a complex form, or of gradual, progressive change, as in a social or economic structure." Most people think or believe that evolution is a natural aspect of life (save for a few fundamentalist Christians who think God created the Earth 6000 years ago). That is, life progresses into newer and better forms. In the case of humans, one would think that the race is a better species now than the days of Neanderthals. Recent experiences over the past year have forced me to conclude that this is wrong. in Here America, over 90 percent of the population believes in God and, according to William B. a recent Time magazine poll, 36 Kinnear Americans actual- Chronicle ly believe Jesus Christ is going to Columnist of percent back" "come before the year 2000. Take a look at the world around you and it becomes fairly obvious that mankind has not progressed one iota in the past 10.000 years. Sure, technology might be better we've got television, Nintendo, virtual reality, FAX machines and jet aircraft, but what about the human mind itself? It may be that I am alone in this thinking, but stupidity seems a trait that should have been weeded out a long time ago. Or maybe human beings have simply screwed up the whole evolutionary process. If intelligence has not kept up with the pace of technology, then perhaps technology has prevented intelligence from evolving (read: TV). More than likely. Oswald Spengler hit the nail on the head in his masterpiece, The Decline of the West. In this work Spengler introduced the theory that cultures go through cycles of rise and decline. Those cultures that decline are replaced by new ones. But perhaps Spengler did not foresee the global village we now live in. Today tech- nology has created one complete global culture. And this one is declining faster every year, so it seems. I suppose it's kinda like a gyro- scope. Fueled by inertia, it eventually winds down and careens out of control. Now that I've spelled out all this gloom and doom, one may ask if I have a solution. Fortunately, I don't. There is no cure. Humans are not evolving, but devolving. And even if people were aware of what's happening, I rather doubt it will make any difference. Yeah, the human race will probably sputter along another 200 years or so, then fade away leaving behind a global rock enveloped by a poison layer of filth and scum. Unless, of course, Jesus comes back first. If he does, he might be a tad pissed off. Now deal with it. students, need to be policed Dr. with finals and preoccupied had a experience. Anyone who has been by the library fountain has seen the ugly dark marks around the edges of the cement left by the skateboarders. These same scars can be seen on several other cement structures on campus as well. Cement, by itself, may not be especially pretty, but the university architects and sculptors have gone to great effort to make it into something aesthetically pleasing. It's sad to me to see it defaced. It's outright vandalism, but I have never seen any action taken to discourage these kids. tration on my studies. However, now that I have collected my wits, I am setting aside some precious time to ask this one important and relevant question: What are these junenile delinquents still doing here? Enough is enough. Yesterday wasn't the first close call I've had with a minor on wheels. Now, I believe that the university campus should be available to the public to enjoy, but I do not believe that they "Expiration Date 63093 Limitations may apply Arguing motions and taking depositions Using tangible evidence Resolving discovery disputes Attending pretrial conferences boards and even bikes and rollerblades completely.
