Houle, Mountain View High School. Bagshaw has been awarded the 1999 "Outstanding Educator Award" for Alpine School district by the Artistic Resource for Teachers and Students Inc., in Salt Lake City. The organization recognizes outstanding arts educators from around the state on an annual basis. Laura Bagshaw has been an elementary teacher for the past 23 years. Art is a major part of her instructional strategy in all subject areas. She uses music to teach the alphabet and phonics skills, dance is employed as part of the physical education program; drama and theater are utilized with language arts units; pictorial art is included in the curriculum for listening and following directions. Dr. Virgil Jacobsen, principal at Westmore, observed, "Miss Bagshaw is very deserving of this recognition. She is an outstanding teacher who exemplifies Houle, of course, has said there is more to it than one coach, and attributes it to a "unique combination of high quality athletes, outstanding coaches, and community and administrative support. All of these have created a climate that no only produces, but expects, state championships." More than 10,000 spectators and 2,000 dancers are expected for the 199 National DanceSport Championships, to be held in the Marriott Center March 4-- 6. Participants will include professional as well as amateur competitors. Jonathan Wilkins and Katushka Demidova will return from New York City to defend their title as U.S. National Professional Standard Champions. In preparing for the evaluation the counselors conducted needs assessments with students, parents, teachers and administration. Their efforts have been directed by the results of the assessment as well as input from an active steering and advisory committee. The "Comprehensive Guidance" model has been used as a blueprint for student services from the day the school was opened. The counselors provide valuable guidance for all students and help them individually prepare their chosen area of interest. David C. Houle is a teacher and coach at Mountain View High School. He coaches track, cross country and basketball and has found great success in his endeavors. Mountain View boasts of many titles and so does Dave Houle. In 1997-9he has the National Record of five state championships in one year. He has also received the Frank Layden High School Basketball Coach of the Year and award for 1996-956 Region Championships in Cross Country, Basketball and track; been named coach of the year in these areas 31 times. This year the boys and girls basketball teams are coming off trn 1 dedication and professionalism." Bagshaw herself has said, "I have always loved the arts. They have been a major part of my life. I have tried to share this joy with students through the years."
