The balding coach of Lehi's swim team was named 3A Swim Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches following the state Swim Meet last Saturday. I That isn't what make him lunusual, though. (It may be something that makes Lehi iHigh School unusual, however, as Meyring is the third Lehi toach to garner a similar honor this year.) Meyring is the kind of per-so-n who gets up at 4:00 a.m. on snowy mornings to make sure pot only his own sidewalks are clear, but every sidewalk in his neighborhood is cleared before he takes off to help his students ."work out at the gym. He's the kind of person who ; patiently listens and counsels a student who calls at 2:00 a.m. Jwith a problem, the kind of person who shows up at his wife Vicki's third grade class at Sego Lily to read them his favorite book, The Diggingest Dog, the kind of husband who hires the ntire Encore choir group to his serenade for wife ;Valentine's Day and then sends gifts as well. ; conversation always seems to turn to the strengths of others and the influences they've had ' on him. Take his own high school swim coach, for example. Meyring claims his coach was like a second father to him as a youth and made a dramatic difference in his life. He says he never would have gone on to college or achieved any of his goals without his coach's influence. "I wanted to be that kind of teacher," Meyring says. Those who know, say Meyring is all that and then some, but Meyring simply says, "I have been really rewarded." He stands at the water's edge and coaches in below freezing temperatures. He does admit to coaching from the water, however, when the thermometer dips towards the 0 mark. You see, Lehi's swim team has only had access to American Fork's indoor pool on basis. an To make up for it, Meyring made with arrangements every-other-d- ay POOR COPY . Saratoga to use their outdoor pool through the winter on the days they can't get into American Fork's pool. Saratoga's pool is heated, but the air surrounding it is not. So during the winter students on the swim team can be found working out in Lehi High School's fitness room at 5:30 every other morning, and every day after school will find them swimming either in American Fork or out at Saratoga Springs "Hour for hour," says Meyring, "swimming takes the most time of any sport," adding that it takes that to train the swimmers. His hundreds of hours of coaching have paid off. Lehi placed first in region competition this year and, even with only seven boys in the state finals, Lehi finished just two points behind fourth place. "That was a great accomplishment for that few boys," Lehi Round-u- p Meyring boasts. Swim team parent Bev Wilson says Meyring looks at the kids as more than just swimmers. Wilson says he sees them as a whole person and is always looking for ways to encourage them in in all aspects of their lives, not just swimming. 6 768-869- 4 768-407- 3 3 766-870- 1 Rodeo Blackie Harris Advanced ticket sales f "There is nothing I want more as a parent than another adult who can impact my children's life to see them as I see them, to know their potential," said Wilson, adding that Coach Meyring has been that kind of person in her daughter's 768-SS2- the Park 768-949- 3 " rfc' Extraordinary leader named Coach of the Year If you want to find out about Meyring, don't talk to him, however.
