Check here Thanks for another great hoops season There are times when this job is a downright privilege, and covering basketball in our communities this year has been one. It isn't just that I love the game. Every one of the 10 teams that we follow boys and girls at Timpanogos, Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Lone Peak and Lehi high schools has contributed its share of stories and superlative individual achievement to the growing legend of what has become the home of Utah's best prep basketball. We're talking Utah County, of course. Six of the eight state tournament semifinal teams in 4A and 5A were from our area, and they captured all four of the titles. The Lehi teams were not quite as dominant as in years past, but both the girls and boys lost only to the state d-place finishers in the tournament. Seven of our 10 teams qualified for the playoffs and the Lone Peak girls went on to win it all, but just in case you've missed some of them, here are a few of this year's other highlights: The Timpanogos and American Fork s girls teams both bounced back from records a year ago to play solidly and win a number of games this season. The second-seedeTimberwolves gave secon- win-les- d Bingham all they could handle before being eliminated from the state tournament by just three points. The Pleasant Grove girls team played with such spirit and love for each other that they were a pleasure to watch whether they won or not. They gave a fine coach a great send-of- f as well, pulling out an overtime win in her final game at the helm. The American Fork boys were picked to finish last in their region and ended up just a few points shy of a tournament berth, despite have just two seniors on the team and a sophomore center. They opened the region year by beating Springville in overtime, who went on to finish second at state to another region opponent, Timpview. Pleasant Grove pulled off the biggest upset of the 4A boys tournament, elimid Olympus before nating to Springville in only the last succumbing few minutes of their quarterfinal. When the Lehi teams were on, they were downright breathtaking to watch. Both teams finished second in their region with a host of gifted athletes on their rosters who gave Lehi fans not only . heavily-favore- a lot to cheer about but some great entertainment too. The third time turned out to be the charm, as Lone Peak Coach Shauna Kay's latest visit to the state finals was rewarded with a team-effovictory. The boys rt team, which relied on a mostly young lineup throughout the season, played bril liantly at times and was a dozen deep in fine players. And finally last but not least, the fabulous Timpanogos boys team, who beat state champion Mountain View with a gutsy play as the final buzzer was sounding in overtime to put an exclamation point on one of the best basketball games I've seen m BRAND NEW STEEL RADIALS!
