FORK Salon Signatures welcomes Heather and Sara! all-tim- A woman came home a day early from an trip and found her husband in bed with a young woman. She was shocked and furious. Just as she was about to storm out of the house and head for a lawyer's office, her husband stopped her with these words: "Before you leave, I want you to hear how this came about. I was driving along the highway when I saw this young woman, tired and bedraggled, so I brought her home and made her a meal from the roast beef you forgot was in the refrigerator. "She was wearing worn-osandals, so I gave her a pair of shoes you had discarded because they were out of style. She was cold, so I gave her the sweater I bought for your birthday but you never wore because the colors weren't right. Her jeans were threadbare, so I gave her a pair of slacks that were perfectly good but you hadn't worn them in a long time because you said they were no longer in style: " "As the woman was about to leave, she turned to me and asked, with a smile, Is there anything else your wife doesn't use anymore?' Dear Ann Landers: I am writing about the letter from "Staten Island, N.Y." I don't know when I have been so riled up. The woman who wrote said she is embarrassed when her mother-in-lalines up her pills at the dining room table and tells everybody what they are for and how much they cost. My mother is 86 and has Alzheimer's. She cannot remember any member of her family by name, is incontinent and talks gibberish. She lives in a locked unit of a nursing home because she has a tendency to leave the grounds and wander around at odd hours. How I wish I had my mom back so I could tell her how much I love her. I would be thrilled to listen to her describe the puis she is taking and tell me all the petty stuff that is going on at the nursing home. out-of-to- ut w Perhaps "Staten Island's" needs more in her life than she is getting. Center, During Cold and Flu Season Cold and flu season is upon us. This is a good time to remember that antibiotics are not effective against the viruses that cause these miserable illnesses. Taking antibiotics when they're not necessary helps to fuel the recent increases in resistant strains of bacteria. This makes fighting dangerous infections, where antibiotics are truly needed, more difficult. Our bodies have the capacity to fight the viruses in our environment. We need to support the effort and help our immune systems by getting more rest, increasing our water intake, avoiding stresses and heavy foods and taking extra Vitamin C.
