Show Lehl Free Press New Utah! - Wednesday, November 18, 1998 - Page 2 Opinion Don't buy it and don't buy into it, or at least be aware A new senator for Dist. 14 Tomorrow evening, a handful of Republican delegates will name the new state senator from District 14 a district which encompasses Orem, Lindon, Pleasant Grove, Cedar Hills and American Caveat emptor has taken on a new meaning for me lately. Latin for "let the buyer beware," most people would probably think of the phrase as an admonition to take care in one's purchases. Unfortunately, one need not even purchase anything these days to need egates will vote. If one of the men gets 60 percent of the delegates to vote for him, his name will be forwarded to Gov. Mike Leavitt, who will appoint him to fill the remaining two years of Peterson's term. If the vote is closer than that, both names will be sent to Gov. Leavitt, who will then appoint his choice to the position. According to current voting patterns, this person will then be the Utah Senator from District 14 as long as he chooses to run for reelection. Utah County voters don't send Democrats to the State Senate, and they don't vote against incumbents. If you had to choose a way to get elected in Utah, this would be it. Campaigning is only done for a short time and is limited to a handful of delegates. Candidates avoid the scrutiny and expense of the general election process until they are in office and can then run with all the security incumbency provides. That puts a tremendous responsibility in the hands of a relative few. It reinforces the importance of the role of the voting district delegate. We encourage delegates to take their responsibility in this matter seriously. They should attend Thursday's caucus. They should listen with care to the candidates and then make the best choice they can. It is a choice we will all probably have to live with for a long time. Fork. This amounts to an awesome one the Republiresponsibility can county delegates from the various voting districts of the cities in District 14 didn't anticipate when they were elected last spring. The man or woman who wins this appointment (only men have applied) will have the opportunity to wield unusual influence in the matters of Utah government. There are only 29 members of the Utah Senate, making each senator's voice an important one. This extraordinary appointment process comes about because Sen. Craig Peterson, who was Senate Majority Leader, has r resigned in the middle of his term. The voters don't get to fill this vacancy. Instead, as many delegates as see fit to participate in the caucus will assemble at the Orem City Council Chambers at 7 p.m. and listen to nominations for John Valentine and Kirk Love, the two men who have asked to be considered for the post. Valentine is currently a member of the Utah House of Representatives. Love has been active behind the scenes in the Utah GOP for years, according to Rep. Lowell Nelson of Highland. Do I have a plan of action so that 25 years from now, I will not only have lived well, but I will also have finished well? Have I maximized my opportunities? Do I have many of the things money will buy and all of the things money won't buy?" As you ponder these questions, you probably come to one critical conclusion: You need to have a plan of action to make certain your future is even better than the offer you just turned down for that future. The next seven steps will get you started. Number One: Set aside an hour during which you write down everything you want to be, do or have. Set your list aside for 48 hours and then ask yourself why you want to be, do or have each item on the list. If you can't answer the question in one sentence, eliminate it for the time being. comebehold. With a flair for stand-u- p dy- our guide brought home the impact of printing and typography in our lives. For example we use several common words and phrases that come from the world of printing. Two particular terms, for example, come from the tradition of putting capital letters in the case above the small letters so they could easily be letfound when setting type by hand ter by letter. Although we now have two or three generations who have never reached into a case to set type by hand, we still call the capitals "UPPER CASE" and the small letters "lower case" The tour also included a personal appearance by Benjamin Franklin or at least somedne who looked just like him! Besides, like a verbal contract, it wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on. Rather it seems printing volume is at an e high and continues to expand. In fact the proliferation of the printed word is seriously taken for granted in our day and age. Hence the need for an historical 377-777- 7 near-futur- all-tim- reminder that not long before Gutenberg, everything had to be copied by hand or pressed on to paper with bulky wooden blocks no movable type, no typewriters, no copy machines, no word processors. In fact, the process of Gutenberg's invention was not substantially improved upon for almost 500 years! A recent U.S. News & World Report article pointed out that, with computer formats and relaelectronic media, the tively short-live- d most reliable long-rang-e storage medium, is probably good old fashioned even if it has to be printed in paper binary code! In Gutenberg's Print Shop, now located in Provo, you can help print a page of the Gutenberg Bible on the only working Gutenberg press in America. You can also see an identical reprint of the most beautiful book in the world the Gutenberg Biblet as a well as a very rare first generation copy of one of its pages. For Latter-da- y Saints, the Crandall Historical Printing Museum is also a religious excursion as the printing of the Book of Mormon is explained and demonstrated on an exact copy of E. B. Grandin's Acorn Press. When taken together with a tour of Benjamin Franklin's English Common Press (identical to his original in the ever-changi- J Smithsonian) and the remarkable story of his invaluable contribution to colonial America, you begin to realize that printing is really a gift from God. As Charles Dickens said, "...the printer is the only product of modern civilization necessary to the existence of free man." When you make the connection that the printed word has been the foundation, catalyst and inspiration for the reformation, all political and religious liberty and the restoration of the gospel, you can't help but have a greater appreciation for what we've had for centuries.
