"We had a great win over Richfield to get us to state," said Coach KaLani Curtis. "We won one match there (their second), and that was one of our goals. I'm proud of the valiant efforts they made." The Pioneers will be saying goodbye to four seniors, all of whom have qualified for Academic honors. I've spent the last two weekends at the state volleyball tournaments, and I was struck by how different the game is today from what it was like when I played. In the first place, there's the uniforms. The shirts haven't changed much, but I don't think biker-typ- e '. shorts had v. even Deen invented yet. We played in culottes, and I'm not sure many of the young women at the tournament have ever even heard of those, much less had to play in them. Second, there's the players., It can't remember a single one in my ,$U?ge, is nbw that size league taller than 5'10 is commonplace, and it looked like a majority of the teams at the tournaments r. had at least one Besides the size difference, today's volleyball players are quicker and can jump The Lehi Arsenal Strikers, under-1- 6 AA 7-- 1 5-- 1 4 . higher than we ever dreamed of. They also end up on the floor more, although the fact that we didn't have knee pads might have had something to 'do with that. The player who could serve overhand was rare back then, and usually phenomenally successful. Now, you have vv w to be able to do that just to make a high school team. The pace of games is a lot faster and more intense now too, and the competitive level has changed so much that the best teams I saw at the tournaments could j, probably beat my college team, which1 won a league championship my sophomore year. Certainly in the running for the biggest and most welcome change is the number of spectators who attend and the interest shown. It is the custom now for cheerleaders to be on hand too, but they did nothing but men's football and basketball in my day. The crowds at the tournament were not huge, but they were vocal, and most schools had a large contingent of male I even saw some student' supporters male coaches and athletic directors at these games. I don't have the words to explain what a change that is from my high school and even my college days. And these, guys had to pay to get the students, at least in, too. Overall, I was extremely impressed with the talent of the athletes and the commitment of their fans. It's great to see that at least in some arenas, our society is still making progress. Finally, I'd like to offer my personal congratulations to the Pioneers, who capped their fine season with respectable finish in the tournament. Rogers and Jason Norman. Lehi's only loss during the to Springville season was when Grimley had to leave the game after 10 minutes because a tooth was knocked out. A defensive strategy focusing on him produced a victory for Timpview in the third round of the county tournament. The Pioneers beat Orem for the second time to earn the right to face Timpview again in the title round.
