Show Sports Free Press Page 7 April 8, 1998 Weather plays role in LHS tennis matches Pioneers in Lehi on April 30. In the meantime Lehi was scheduled to travel to Tooele this past Monday and to entertain the Hawks of North Sanpete next Tuesday. Wofford feels comfortable with his team rankings and doesn't anticipate any changes with Judd Peck and Brett Francom dueling it out for the top spots. The two juniors were doubles partners throughout the last season and finished second at state in second doubles, but they both want to play singles this year and the coach is willing to grant them that wish. Al Wood, the only senior on a young team, seems to have the third singles spot nailed down while Wade Francom, Rob Egbert, Lee Adamson, Cam Holbrook, Don Wilson and Ryan Lund fight it out to compose the doubles teams. Wilson By Tracy With the unpredictable weather over the past few days, Lehi High School's tennis players have had to reschedule their weekly matches, but Coach Alan Wofford is still hoping to get in enough practice and matches to be ready for the region and state meets in May. Originally a visit from the Utes of Uintah was set for last Thursday but rain terminated that idea. Grantsville also showed up Thursday, thinking they had a match scheduled against the Pioneers. Both Vernal and Grantsville were having sunny weather and so neither coach thought to call Wofford to make sure the matches were on. Late reg Pioneers suffer first loss; come back with win By Beky Beaton The Pioneer soccer team suffered their first loss of the season April 3 against Park City, the team they beat for the championship last year. ' The Miners won 1 on a late goal. Lehi beat Uintah at home 0 on the 1st. In the Wednesday game, the first half was scoreless. The Pioneers got their first goal when the Uintah keeper caught a from Shawn Sorensen and stepped back into the box. Later in the game, Jacob Hafen was taken down in the 2-- 2-- flip-thro- w penalty area on a run that appeared certain to produce a goal. Lex Grimley scored on the penalty kick. "It was ugly, but well take it," said Coach Mike Corbett. On Friday, the team came out flat and took a long time to respond to Park City's motivated play. The Miners scored an early goal, but were held after that until nearly the end of the game. The Pioneers stepped things up in the second half and scored almost immediately on a ball bouncing around in front of the goal. Danny Anderson got the hit, with an assist credited to Jayson Chamberlain. The teams dueled even after that until Park City got one more with about 7 minutes left. Lehi outshot them 12-- in the game but failed to convert, despite putting overwhelming pressure on the defense at times. "It's always tough to lose," Corbett said. "We didn't practice this week as hard as we should have and we weren't emotionally prepared for this game." The team may have become a bit complacent after their start; most of those games were no contest. The loss at this juncture could be just the thing to 9 6-- 0 inject enthusiasm back into the players. In the meantime, Andy Grimley was having a spectacular week on the developmental teams, scoring six goals. He had both in the junior varsity's 2 game with Uintah. Jake Dorton added one to a second pair in a 3 2-- 3-- 1. Summer is just around the it is now time to start making your reservations with the U.S. Forest Service for your favorite campsites. Colledge Cody scored the game's first run in the top of the second. Two innings later, Royce Hampton and A.J. Smith each scored a run for the Pioneers. Tyler Nelson, Trevor Varney and Trulock each hit two singles for the Pioneers during the Wednesday afternoon barn- burner. The win was Lehi's first triumph of the season. Lehi could not ask for a more tough foe to open region play against than Uintah. Coming into the game, the Utes were ranked No. 3 in state 3A polls. The Pioneers didn't let that ranking intimidate them any, however. Their top pitcher, Jeremy Brown, held the Utes scoreless for the first four innings of the game. The game moved so quickly that the first three innings were completed in 40 minutes. reason for the game's quick pace was the pitching duel between Brown and Fudge A big Petersen. Take the first inning for example. While Brown helped ground out the first three Ute hitters, Petersen struck out the top three Lehi batters. The next inning, Brown walked Cory Kebert. The next Ute hitter, Jon Muir, tried getting on base on a passed ball e situation. during a Catcher Cody Colledge picked up the ball and threw to second baseman Josh Peck to turn a double play. Third baseman Smith snared a Steve Hatch fly ball for the other out. In the third, Greg Harbison singled into right for the game's first hit. He then tried stealing second, but a throw from Colledge to Peck put the Ute Iff r- - " f 4 3-- singled. Left fielder Travis Colledge accidently dropped an Adam Madsen fly ball, letting the two Ute runners cut home.
