Show Free Press - March 4, 1998 - Page 12 Lady Pioneers finish sixth at state By Dean Von Memmott The Lehi Pioneers ended their girls' basketball season e with a finish at last week's state 3A tournament at Weber State University's Dee Event Center. In last Thursday's quarterfinals, Lehi lost to the Pine View 1 in overtime. Panthers The Pioneers bounced back Friday morning tp oust the Emery Spartans but in the consolation on championship game Saturday, the North Sanpete Hawks overcame the weary Pioneers It was an extraordinary run for a team that had to play an extra tiebreaker game just to get in the playoffs in the first place. Even then, they entered as the fourth-plac- e and lowest seed from their region, and promptly upset Bear River on their court in the first round. Lehi Coach Eric Drage called the tourney a "good experience for them. They won some state games. That will be good for us to build upon next year." In spite of a poor second quarter, the Pioneers came within a hair of making the tournament's final four. It didn't start that way though. By the way the quarterfinal game opened, Lehi looked like they weren't going to mount much of a challenge. A Jessica Freeman trey sent the Panthers out to a lead. A Callie Trane trey and an Andria Goodwin layup cut it sixth-plac- 43-4- fourth-ranke- d 45-3- 46-3- 2. third-ranke- d 7-- 0 down to No sooner had Lehi positioned itself to tie the game when Genis Glauser dropped in bomb to widen a three-poithe Panther advantage to 10-Aided by another three-pointe- r, Cory Atkinson evened 7-- 5. nt 5. the game at 10. Shauntel Garrett blocked Pioneer Lacey Yates from breaking the tie near the quarter's conclusion. Pine View capitalized on the block during the next period. In the early second period, The Panthers broke the tie with a scoring run, fueled by free throws from Alisha Broadhead and Krystal Esplin. A Cally Gillman trey put Lehi within That turned out to be the only Lehi scoring for the quarter. The Panthers' stingy defense kept the Pioneers from getting shots on the floor, and Lehi was cold at the line during the period. When the first half terminated with Pine View ahead questions arose as to whether Lehi would recover. Drage said, "After that frustrating second quarter, they came out in the second half and responded the way I wanted them to." They wasted no time in coming through for him. The new half opened with Yates become a hot scoring machine inside the key. As soon as Yates had produced a three-poiplay, Esplin hit in two free throws in hopes of offsetting the Pioneers. The Panther's foul shooting didn't 6-- 0 16-1- three-point- er 20-1- work. No sooner had Yates made a layup when Gillman stole the ball and passed it to her for a bucket. After Yates had tied the game at 22, Gillman hit a that put Lehi ahead Krystal Esplin and her sister, Heather Esplin, guided Pine View back out in front The rest of the half was a story of trades in the leads. The big players in the exchanges included Yates, Gillman, and the Esplin sisters. The Pioneers led by as far as four points. Lehi's final lead was Krystal Esplin and Garrett chopped it down to After a Trane free throw had stretched it to a Freeman bucket evened the game at 39, forcing the game into overtime. In the overtime phase, Panther Kassi Ackerman's two free throws broke the deadlock. Lehi suffered a serious setback when a leg injury forced Gillman to leave the game. Fouled while trying to score on a steal, Trane hit two free throws to even the game at 41. At 0:19.4, Krystal Esplin hit two free throws to lift Pine View to the semifinals. "What it came down to was that we missed some easy shots. We would have had the game won if we had made them," Drage said. "They didn't let us make them. That's a credit to their defense." Yates led Lehi with 15 points while Gillman added 11 points and Trane 10. Krystal Esplin led Pine View with 16 points. In Friday's action, Drage three-point- 26-2- 3. guided them within 5. 7. Bradley guided Emery within just before the third quarter's conclusion. Despite stubborn resistance from Bradley and Larsen, Yates led Lehi in building double-digleads in the final quarter. The Pioneers earned their first double-figur- e lead when two Goodwin free throws put the score at After that, Emery couldn't get any closer than nine points, because of nice foul shooting by Dallas Downs, Trane, Goodwin, and 26-2- 1 it nt 35-2- 7, fcM, " X!f W y p 1 s v r if 1! After having eliminated their archrivals, the Pioneers went in against North Sanpete. The Saturday contest featured a mixture of Lehi's best and worst performances of the season. The worst was during the first quarter. As soon as Kristen Bailey and Emily Jacobson had guided North Sanpete out to a lead, Darci Bailey hit two free throws. The golden opportunity that they presented Lehi vanished quickly. A Jenny Aagard bucket launched a 10-- scoring run for North Sanpete. The Hawks took a 13-- lead into the second quarter. The toothpaste should be ADA ( American Dental Association) accepted and con-:ai- n fluoride. The taste & packaging of a toothpaste can make brushing more fun for your child. This leads to your child brushing more frequently and for a longer length of time. Your child should brush 2 times a day for at least a minute each time. Should I let my child use my mouthwash or fluoride rinse? Most commercial mouthwashes contain a large amount of alcohol -alcohol. It is Listerine contains 21 harder for children not to swallow the mouthwash, and it can lead to a very upset stomach. Mouthwashes have no benefit for children, and should not be used by them. Fluoride rinses are okay for older, but not younger children. Proper brushing and flossing is all that is necessary for your child.
