In the interim, the city tried to obtained the services of William Keetch, a judge for Lindon City, who turned down the city's request; to fill the vacancy until Jenkins could become certified for the position, the city temporarily appointed Wort hen to fill his own vacancy. Jenkins was officially sworn in May 7. The city council approved a the recommendation made by a special committee that the city contract with Orem City to provide containment for animals picked up by animal control officers. Telephone, postal growth US West added two ne tele766 and 767 to phone prefixes the Lehi area to handle anticipated growth. The utility, in response to both public interest and pressure from area legislators, considered impleExtended menting county-widArea Service (HAS), effectively making all exchanges within Utah County a local call. Service Public After the Commission (PSC) order US West to implement the change according to a modest fee schedule, the company appealed, saying they would lose over .$1 million in long distance revenues. The PSC, however, ruled in favor of telephone subscribers EAS will go into effect Jan. 25, e 1997. Several residents of Lehi also started a move to get EAS into Salt Lake exchanges; a traffic study has already indicated that the call volume does not warrant the move, but supporters are hoping to get the same public backing from the earlier process. One official suggested that the call volume is low because of the many Salt Lake area exchanges available and because US West does not count calls made on alternative service provider lines. The US Postal Service is looking to build a new facility in Lehi. Although the sale on the desired land has not formally been approved, officials are planning a new post office at 300 E. Main, across from the National Guard Armory. The expanded post office will feature a postal store, additional post office boxes, and 40 parking spaces. In connection with the growth at the post office. Vic Tapp was hired as customer service supervisor. Residents of Cedar Fort are also likely to see expansion of their postal facility as the bureau announced in March that it would not change to a contract operation as officials once suggested. also Service Postal The announced that the departni'-nwould begin looking for a site for an expanded facility and would name a postmaster to succeed Donna Cook, who had retired Vonda Cook, Donna's daughter-in-law- , served as officer in charge until the post office named Dan Whyte of Bountiful a.- - the new postmaster. Near the end uf the ;.vai. the Postal Service selected a site on Highway 73 for a !I50 square foot ' building, provided he town of Cedar Fort would approve a ase agreement for water. Despite Mime controversy about the availability of water, the Town Council approved a lease agreement in order to secure the post office.
