The Pioneers will face the Cedar City Redmen Friday in the quarter final game on the way to state. Game time is at 4 p.m. on the Pioneer Lehi baU field. Pioneers gear to face Redmen By TRACY WILSON Lehi High School's football team stormed past Union High School Friday night, and earned themselves a share of the Region 10, Class 3A North, division title with a 1 record and a win over the Cougars, 24-- They are now set to meet Cedar City on Friday at 6-- 7. home. The win, coupled with a Wasatch victory over Emery, assured the Pioneers of a second-plac- e seed in the upcoming quarterfinal playoff picture against Cedar City High School's Redmen. Cedar finished tied for second with Dixie in the southern division at 2 as they stopped 4 Pineview, 4-- 30-1- is tentatively Friday's scheduled for 4 p.m. on the Pioneer Field. The field was the site of the state championship soccer contest last Saturday which Lehi's girls won over defending champion Park City. The field is a quagmire of mud having been used Thursday last week for two football games match-u- p against Union and then Friday's two semifinal soccer matches. Coach Chad Wilson, LHS football mentor, is concerned about the option offense of the Redmen, but quickly added that the Pioneers were able to shut down the Wasatch Wasps, who also run the option, earlier in the season. "Cedar City does a good job of play action off the option," according to Wilson. Adam Larsen and Travis Searle combined for 238 yards on the ground last Friday against Pine View. head coach The second-yea- r feels that North Sanpete is still the "team to beat" for state, since they have "too many weapons," but he respects Snow Canyon as a "good team." He feels that whoever puts together a couple of good games will win the state title. Of course, the Pioneers have to get past Cedar City to even think about Snow Canyon or North Sanpete. The Hawks rely heavily on the "big play" defense, meaning they take chances, cause fumbles, and blitz a lot, but sometimes they get burned. Traditionally, Lehi has not done well in the state playoffs, but this is a new team loaded with seniors, and a comparatively new coaching staff. These boys have been ranked in the polls for the entire season, rising as high as number one before losing to North Sanpete in a fumble-fille- d contest at Mt.1 Pleasant. They are currently rated number two behind Snow Canyon. Last Friday night, Lehi played a big first half, then they were just anxious to get it over with and get on the bus for home. It was cold and wet and too many flags (on both teams) kept the game going longer than it should have gone, according to the coaching staff. Junior quarterback Braden Cooper drew first blood for the run after Pioneers with a the visitors started their drive with good field position on their own 40. Jake Hunt's kick was blocked for A the pass from Cooper to Kelton Butterfield added to the Pioneer total in the second period but the PAT again failed as Cooper tried to pass for two. Aplanalp, Union runner, sprinted in from the Lehi 8 to give the home crowd something to cheer about and then quarterback Clint Gardner passed to Morrill for the conversion to move within four points, but that's where the Cougar express stalled. Lehi added six more before the half on a Jason Smith run for four pass yards set up by a from Cooper to Nate Christofferson dart by Smith. Again and a the PAT kick failed. In the third quarterback for quarter, back-u- p Lehi, Travis Colledge, dove in from the two for the final points of the night. The running PAT was short. Defensively, the Pioneers were credited with a team effort led by Ben Woodruff who recorded nine solo tackles, three for loss, three assists and caused one fumble. " Tiiey held the Cougars to 58 yards in 23 carries, one for 40 yards by Aplanalp on a reverse. Gardner added only 41 yards on five completions in 26 pass attempts; he by was intercepted twice, Butterfield and Christofferson. The Pioneer totals showed 348 yards with 236 on the ground and 112 in the air. Smith was credited for 185 of the ground yards and brings his total for the year to 1331 yards in eight games. Lehi has thrown 180 times during the season and completed 85 for 1801 yards and a 47 percent average. Nine LHS receivers have caught the ball this year as they spread it around to keep the defenses off balance. But the loss was only their second of the season against four wins and sends a message to other schools in the region that Lehi is least going to be competitive for at a couple more years. They have wins over Uintah, North Sanpete, Logan and Emery with their other loss coming at the hands of 4A Spanish Fork. Individually, the young Pioneers have had some injuries to key players that have allowed others to gain experience and that may prove beneficial in the long run. Jake Sunderland and John Lewis were tight ends who were being looked to for good things. Sunderland was also holding down a key linebacker position when he was injured. Trevor Varney, Trent Colledge, Andy Hadfield and Jake Hunt were all pressed into service in the varsity program although they are fill juniors but were needed to vacancies caused by injury.
